Actually I think it's a great Idea, it's below the thread, so "not in the way" and if the links actually reflect the product in the thread that would make referencing the product specs/prices etc much easier.

Could we pay a yearly fee not to see them?

They are small, and are a good way of advertising on this site.

Very intrusive and visually unappealing. If the information on the one's that are up now are what they will be like, almost completely useless.

That being said, if you need the revenue to keep the site going, go for it.
It's a minor annoyance, but I would rather have ads than no TPU.

Can they go after the last post of each thread? That way they don't break up continuity.

I have thread listing "reversed" and the adds show up under post 1(newest most recent post on top), if all the adds could be under post one regardless as to the order of display it would work out maybe?

I think they're horrible, especially considering that they have absolutely nothing to do with the topics...

I get "Buy a Diamond HD 2900XT 1GB" while reading the "France cuts off pirate internet service" thread. If we absolutely need advertising, then I think we should put banner ads into the forums, and put them in a way that does not directly interfere with the text/message of the thread.

Agreed. Or if they were smarter and could display protects that actually have to do with the thread subject it'd be ok where it is right now.

I certainly understand the reason behind these ads. I mean, we have 30k+ users, and 1500+ users visiting the site at any given moment. You harness that into advertising dollars, and BAM you're rich.

However, it really does detract from the site. If users feel that they're getting submerged in blatant advertising, then they're going to leave. Suddenly 1500 users becomes 75 users, and bye-bye advertising dollars...

I think we should do what Something Awful does for the unregistered users, and place banner ads at the top and bottom of the page. You get more advertising space (hence, revenue), it's less obvious, and you don't get on the nerves of everyone who's just trying to scroll through the news.

Terrible IMO. I know that webspace is expensive, but there are places for ads and at the bottom of every new thread is not the place for them.

Personally, I don't mind advertisements. I've ran websites before, and I know they take a lot of money to run. I don't mind if a forums has an ad or two in the header or footer. But one thing I don't like is when the advertisements get into the actual post area. Specifically when the advertisements are inside your signature or post. I don't mind after the posts as much. Those I can live with. The ONLY advertisement I hate more than ads in the forum is those bloody IntelliText ads!

Putting ads in to help keep the site going is a good idea, but this is just annoying. IMO, if you just put it right before the first post, or right after the last, it would be much less annoying.

I think they're horrible, especially considering that they have absolutely nothing to do with the topics...

I would guess that since this is just a test, that is the only ad available. I'm sure there will be more relevant ads once it is up and running. Though, there are just some topics where there won't be a relevent ad available...

I'll second that as well. I'm fine if the advertisement is above the first post, or below the last post in a separate table or div.

if the adverts have some sort of relation to the thread, or are small and dont interupt the thread, i.e top and bottom then i am all for this. i dont want TPU to go.

Wasnt there a post way back (hell maybe even from APK) that there was a way to kill the flash adds if we saw fit on the old style forum pages.....Could we possibly set up an option in the user CP????

To show or not to show?

Altho I dont mind them ...they do seem to have an odd placement, may just need some getting used to, or hell make them more obvious with purty colors and the like!!!!!

I'm for it. Only because it takes a lot of money, like everyone has said, and it will help us out in the long run. It will get annoying, but I can deal with it if it means that I can talk with the people who think (semi) the way I do.

Could we pay a yearly fee not to see them?

They are small, and are a good way of advertising on this site.
2nd that
I'd rather pay a yearly fee for this site, then the 4 sites that I am a member of and just see the same thing over and over again...:banghead:

Well, the places I've highlighted could also be used in the actual threads, but you get the idea...non-invasive, yet still eye-catching and revenue-producing.

So the current consensus is banner ads that you can pay an annual fee to disable?
