yea $100 a year is a bit much. also a limit on PM space could save money i mean do you really need 1000 messages. cap it to about 100 id say, where as mods/admin could have more as they do proberly have a greater usage of them

i need the pm space....

the cash amounts were just examples, something like 25 bucks a year would be more sensible i think.

Well ya have to what ya have to do and if ads will help to keep TPU around ads it is.

How ever ads from respected sites only would be nice like Newegg Tigerdirect and such.

I would do some of what Hardocp is famous for. They have a even larger member base and they have to advertise the crap out of it. I do not mind intellitext ads as long as they don't stand out, and don't slow down the forums. I am also all for header footer ads, although maybe not in the placement zek suggested, it would detract severely from the site's layout.

I propose between the techpowerup banner and the vbulletin header, and then between the thread and quick reply.

For adblocking, ads blocked are not loaded, so no money is made from them. Hardocp has a rule of banning those found to be ad blocking, which I support. With that comes the need for a paid style system too. I believe theirs is a mere $5 a year or something, which I would pay.

w1zz just keep the ads small and tech related. More the better for variety.

If it helps, thats alright, but I thought my PC was bugged with adware for a minute. Put them on the side or on the top of the website. The way they are, I highly doubt anyone will click them. Also, Im not gonna pay to visit a forum  Sorry, Im just not gonna do it.

meh . . . I don't mind the ads, as long as they don't become flash or shockwave style banners - those are absolutely distracting and annoying. I think the ads would be best placed at the top of the page, and another at the bottom would be alright, IMO. In the middle of the thread can be a bit distracting . . . if it was smaller, and didn't look like an actual post - y'know, something that just sits in the middles of the page with no borders around it, if might not be so bad.

I saw one in a different thread, before I had read this thread, and was like: "WTF, Batman?!" - I had thought the page had been haxored.

=> I think charging a small fee (like, $25 or less per year) to remove them would be alright; or, users that have been around long enough to attain 1000 posts and have been a member for at least 1 year should be given the option to disable them, or have them removed without a fee. That way, you're not really penalizing those that have been here a really long time, and for newer members that intend to stick around for a long while, it's something to look forward to - and if it bothers newer members enough, they can pay the small fee to remove them.

Also what is the deal with these ads, I keep seeing mainly 3 products about 80% of the time. And very rarely something new. Its always a 2900XT, 8800GTX and some PSU.

I'm not really a fan of the senior thing. On another forum where I'm a moderator there are people who more or less have no lives and can get 1000 posts like its nothing. There are members here, and I like to count myself in this group, that feel they are part of this community and help people quite often. But I don't really post unless its something meaningful, as opposed to many members who will throw out one liners here and there which rapidly increases their post count. Which member is more valuable to the community? Both are of course, but one gets rewarded while the other doesn't. Also it might cause some people to post nonsense more often just to get 1000 posts and get rid of ads.

partly why I mentioned the 1 year mark, too. I feel the same about my being here, too, but would be willing to deal with ads until I've been registered here for a year - that's just me, though. Besides, I really just think it would be a shame to see senior members pick up and leave over something piddly as thread advertisements. I mean, I udnerstand how some people feel about not wanting to have to see advertisements, or pay to be registered, but those same members who've made those posts appear to have been here for quite some time - and I'm sure in some way they've helped TPU become what it is; why "punish" them?

besides, posts in GN don't count . . . and I think the moderators would catch on to anyone spamming a thread or numerous spam posts and could nock their post counts back down.

I really dont mind ads, if I can tell they are ads (I'm not that stupid, I know they are ads.) But, I really hate ads that are "disguised" as parts of the web page. These actually look almost like posts, the one is see is describing an 8800gt, but I put my mouse over one of the links, and it says (in the status bar) basically that its going to send me to what looks like another post at techpowerup, but it takes me to zipzoomfly.. not that thats a bad thing, but why not just tell me that in the ad.

I REALLY hate those double-underlined words that pop up as you scroll down and accidentally put your mouse pointer over then, then you have to either "x em out" or WAIT FOREVER for them to go away, as you try to read something behind them. I don't care what they are selling, I don't even look or care whatsoever. They have pop-up blockers, are there "double-underlined word blockers"?

I'd rather look at a nice, tasteful, banner ad at the top of the page. Thats the problem though these days, it seems like nobody has any taste. As long as it isn't another "kill the mosquito" or "click your mouse as fast as you can for a free car". I'm a lot more willing to click on an add if I actually know where its going to take me before I click on it, I like ads with information I guess, not stupid gimmicks.

You have a point there. And with you 100 percent. I've learned so much more in the past month (3 months I read) on here then I would of if I just looked at books. It's places like this that make the people, that later, become the Guy(s)/Girl(s) who can fix anything and get the great jobs because of that. I'm for anything that makes this site go future and stay a live.

Thats it, the in thread ads have to go. I've probably middle clicked on at least 5 now just from scrolling through threads. It is really irritating me.

I don't think it's that bad because it's only the first post and not after every single post. And to be honest I'm one to ignore most ads anyways (most, not all).

It would help if they were actually related to the thread though, by keywords or however that works.

Took some screenshots and MSPainted in advertising space we could use without really interrupting the flow of TPU.

+1 :respect:

Bangin'. I like the placement of those. Not that I can see the ads anyways, but I wouldn't really mind if they were there. If it brings in the loot to keep this place running/independently wealthy, cool beans. I click ads to support sites that I frequent.
