This Sunday, August 31st, 2008 marks the 13th anniversary of the storied Command & Conquer franchise, which has sold over 25 million copies* to date. And to celebrate Sunday’s milestone and this October’s highly anticipated return to the world of Red Alert with Red Alert 3, EA Los Angeles is giving away one of the original games that started it all, Command & Conquer Red Alert, for FREE.

Starting at 12:00 AM Pacific time on August 31st, C&C fanatics can flock to www.RedAlert3.com to download the original Red Alert free of charge. And because EA is also offering Red Alert 2 for free for those who pre-order Red Alert 3 before October 27th, C&C fans can walk away with Red Alert, Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 3 – all for the price of Red Alert 3 ($49.99 standard edition, $64.99 Premier Edition).

they are 16bit, the CnC engine they used for the original CnC and Red Alert was built for DOS, and 64bit OS's don't handle 16bit code

Downloading it now, I'll run it in a virtual machine.

Edit: Actually I already own the game, so screw downloading it.

Real men play what they enjoy whether it was every release or not! :p

I've played since C&C was released, loved every release...but felt there's no reason to keep the ones I no longer play or can't due to new technology via hardware and software. The ones I've played also include console versions, which meh...consoles don't do RTS like a PC, never will.

my CnC Gold still works fine, get the XP patch for it and it runs fine, same with Red Alert. And TS and RA2 are 32bit and run fine on 64bit. Sole Survivor runs on XP but there isn't a point to it, no one plays it anymore.

Sole Survivor was fun as hell back in the day..I still have that CD lol! I put 100's of hours into it, built clan sites around it, in fact that's how I got into web design was designing fan/clan sites for SS and TS. I even interviewed a couple of Westwood game devs and what's his face that plays kane...that was pretty cool! Too bad all my work has been taken down after I dissapeared from the scenes and I deleted the backups a few years ago lol...I have the memories tho!

    WOAH! you interviewed GOD?

    mustve been amazing

Joe Kucan is the man, Command and Conquer is the best Red Alert is just a bit less uber for the fact it it dosnt have the ole slaphead himself. I liked how they put Darth Vader in Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun, well it was his voice James Earl Jones that is!

Infact wasnt Red Alert supposed to be tied to command and conquer, i know the first one had the slap head in a few cut scenes i mean what was with the Red Alert Endings?

It was kickass, I was like 14-15 at the time...but things just happened to line up and I got many referrals to get on "the list" for interviewers, dude it was so f-ing cool! Joe's a really cool guy, very respectful, funny as hell. Those were my glory days as a C&C geek tho...I love the game series and play it a lot still, well the new C&C3+ part of the series anymore, but I'm not in it hardcore enough to do what I was back then! :D

Yeah RA was supposed to be seperate, I hear ya on the first one and it's cut scenes...and the endings lol!

They had Micheal Beign (I forget how the hell to spell his damn name!) in TS too iirc. They've had quite a few well-known actors which I find is cool, they keep the cutscene trend going, even when the times get corny, it's still a C&C finish that makes this game stay true to it's roots.
