The German-Dutch storage specialist Freecom Technologies presents its new product, packaging and web design. With the clear and uncomplicated design first seen at CeBIT 2006, Freecom underscores its claim to appealing visual appearance and style. The Freecom Hard Drive for PC and Mac is now the first external hard disk to be available in the minimalistic aluminium housing with LED display and new packaging. This high-quality and simultaneously cost-effective 3.5" data medium is equipped with passive cooling, and therefore dispenses with a fan. This new Freecom product, which will initially be available with capacities of 80, 160 and 250 GB, is therefore particularly quiet in operation, and therefore ideally suitable for use in the home.
Connection takes the form of a USB 2.0 interface, or optionally USB 1.1. Like all Freecom products, the new Hard Drive complies fully with the CE standard (to EMC Directive). Basic product data/price information:
  • Prices (RRP): Freecom Hard Drive € 89 (80 GB), € 119 (160 GB), € 139 (250 GB)
  • Contents: Freecom Hard Drive, Freecom Personal Media Suite software, USB connection cable, manual on CD, Quick Install Guide
  • Weight: 750 grams, dimensions: 11.5 x 4 x 20 cm
  • Speed: 7,200 rpm, buffer 2 MB
  • Freecom offers its usual 2-year manufacturer's guarantee and unlimited helpdesk support (Free Call)

Whats so special about this? Passive cooling means no fan, you say it has a fan so its active cooling. 2 mb cache doesnt cut it these days, 8 mb minimum!

I don't know if I should tell this to you, but according to my knowledge dispense with=without, less, free of....etc, or in context: and therefore dispenses with a fan = there's no need of fan. Correct me if I am wrong.

Really?

Forgive me, I appreciate the increased amount of news being posted lately. Techpowerup has become one of the four sites I check every day for important news. This item is a bit on the unimportant side IMHO. I'm sure there is much more important hardware and tech news to post. I am only 1 consumer but I wanted to give feedback to the new postings.
