OK, quick sketch in Paint of a layout I could do. Anything need adding/removing?

I you think so, let me know. I value everyones opinion.

ditch nav bar one and keep two only. and the advert on top of the text, move that into nav bar 1's place. also, get some sort of background up, not just white, a different color would be fine, but i think white isn't good

It has 8GB because that one was designed with maximum performance and not needing to upgrade for a while in mind. Hence, it has 8GB.

And I'm working on non-gamer stuff ATM so people who need to do homework can buy a cheapo one for £300.

Gaming wise......the graphics card(s) would need to be upgraded LONG before you would need more then 4GB of RAM for a game to run 'comfortably'. Personally, I would use only 4GB of RAM and use the cash saved to put a better sound card in it ;) (ie the Razer Barracuda or X-Fi Xtreme Gamer)

maybe 8 gb of ram for a "serious photoshoping/video editing line" of comps. i have to agree with you 8 gb is overkill, and i just realized that 2gb is max for a ddr2 stick, so you'd have 4 sticks, and the problem with that for gaming is that you can't access all memory at once. i say take it off and give some money back to the consumer and add a good sound card. a 4gb kit costs like 200, a cheaper x-fi can cost 100. (usd)

Exactly my point m8....I can see what Ben is trying to do, he wants that WOW factor! But most people looking for a 'gaming' rig would know that 8GB of DDR2 is total overkill and is just an added expense!

4GB max, is all a gaming system would need and I cant see that changing for quite sometime.

Sometimes, less is more ;)

These guys undercut you by upto £200 pounds.

Lets compare systems shall we

http://www.pcoption.co.uk/pcbaseunits/index5d_8800slip4con.htm

http://ukfolders.mpog.co.uk/bccomp/celestialgamer8800gtx.html

So for the pcoption PC, you need to upgrade:

CPU to q6600
gfx to 8800gtx
psu to enermax 1000w
case to antec 900
OS to vista premium
motherboard to lets say p5b for now
hard drive to 2 x 500gb in RAID
4 gigs of Corsair pc2-6400 C4 RAM

Price comes out at £1418

Even if you do use as good components as on that PC ive specced, you're being undercut by a fair bit.

If you want to make it big, youll need to beat these prices. Dell/Alienware are not your competitors, these small companies are. Also remember to drop your prices, come the price cut on july 22nd for intel CPUs.

i bet you he has a better mobo, and better kind of ram, however his website does not list it. details ben, look at their website's details which would bring the price to almost ben's price say he had corsair ram and a p5b deluxe as his options, the price would be above. also ben you must recalculate price because of recent ram price drops, it looks to me as if you're using prices that are a month or two old. (also probably same for the mobo)

A 1000w PSU is a bit OTT. A good 600/700watt PSU would suffice and cut at least £50 off the price.

yup but we're comparing a comprable system to ben's and configuring it. oh woops, just saw that you're the same guy, and yeah that's true, i've said before something like a hx 520 or hx 620 (w/e the corsair psu's are)

Yep, this was just a general comment not related to the comparison. Remember though, Ben is giving zero flexibility over the system.

I think if he can build an 8800gtx, quadcore system with good components for £1300 he'd be onto a winner. A profit margin of £100 per build seems reasonable as well giving a price of £1399. (This is all before the intel price cuts)

yup, i totally agree with his zero flexibility, if i were building computers, i would ask what they would use the computer for now, and what do they see themself doing with it in 2 or 3 years. from there i would build a completely customized system, some people want a htpc forever, some people want a lan box, some people want a quite computer, some people don't want lcds, some people don't want loud computers, some people want bland computers that match, etc the list goes on for a long time.

ben as a small builder, you have this kind of flexibility, and it's this kind of thing and the price that will win customers over. i work in a fast food restaurant, and let me tell you, it's half product, and half service, you have to go the "second mile" of service, not just the "first mile" of the product

I am working on the flexibility option, I'm trying to get something working that helps people choose their specs. I am going to double-check on prices twice a month, and I'll lower the CU's RAM to 4GB. And as for quad-core with 8800GTX for £1300, I might be able to soonm, it's costing me just over £1400 at the minute.

And new layout draft:

Updated site with new layout. Is it any better, or does it need tidying up a bit more?

It's better but you still have that white background you should try some different colors like light and dark grays nothing to extreme. Those link buttons at the top of the page are really ugly you should really change those. That graphic you have at the left hand side of the screen just doesn't seem to fit I would get rid of it or rework it to better match the sit and what your trying to do it needs to scream we sell PC's. And by the way just out of curiosity what program are you using to make the website frontpage? I would suggest dreamweaver it's a far superior program and will give you better results or you could go with a flash based site that would be your best bet if you or one of your friends know how to do it or just learn lot's of tutorials out their.

Well good luck.

At the minute I'm using MS FrontPage 2003. I will eventually move to Dreamweaver when I can afford it while still having backup, but until then, I have to stick with this. As for the white background, that has to stay or I'l have to redo all the graphics on the site so it matches the background colour, and I made the mistake of compressing to JPEG format. So until I can fix that, I'm afraid it has to stay white. And I am now working with 2 others in this business, so hopefully it will get better over time.

Thnaks for all your ideas.

PS: If you have any more ideas, please e-mail them to bccomp@ukfolders.mpog.co.uk. That way I can see all the ideas in one place. Thanks.

Yep, more custom PC Building site's I've seen actually use a darker color scheme/background, they also list damn near every feature of every option of every component. Which is what you need to do if you're planning on selling Custom High End PC's Ben. Seriously you should listen to me while you can and go smaller, go a little more basic, a lot less cheaper, until you can get a foothold of experience on this. You're trying to start at the top, and you are starting to topple before the thing is even going.

I know that you can be successful, and hope you will. But you need to list more, if you are asking from help and critisism from a PC Tech site, keep doing your best to heed it.

Here's an example:
A great PC for gaming, the Celestial Gamer 8800GTX incorporates NVIDIA's top of the line graphics chip, and Intel's quad-core processor for maximum performance. Reasonably priced, and with a massive performance rating, this computer can provide everything you need for years to come.

Specifications:

Intel Quad-Core Q6600 2.4GHz CPU
4GB RAM
GeForce 8800GTX 768MB Graphics Processor
20x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer
750GB Harddisk
1010W Power Supply Unit for extra stability

That's the weak description of your Celestial Gamer 8800, so for starters, where are the brands of each component? What about HDD brand with SATA 1/2 interface verifacation, and why not get two 500GB's for a 1TB Raid setup off the bat?

What kind of ram? Performance? Cheap? Does it have heatspreaders? Is it a well known brand? What are the Timings/Voltage ratings? Are they covered under warranty of OC'd? By the MFG? By You? And really why offer 4GB of RAM instead of two providing an option for 4GB, because if they don't use a 64Bit OS, then they won't be able to properly or fully utilize 4 Gigs, plus if you're gonna put 4 gigs of RAM in there, you might as well have 1TB of SATA Storage.

Where's the Motherboard listing? What kind of motherboard? What Kind of features? What kind of upgradability does it have? Say if the person wanted another DVD drive, or a HD-DVD or Blue Ray, or another HDD for a 1TB+ RAID? Does the MB itself have good enough NB/SB cooling? Does it use solid caps? Is it a name brand, well known company?

And more could be said about the GF8800GTX, and people can be picky, but letting them know the brand, features of this as well would be recommended.

What kind of DVD Drive did you provide? Brand? Is it SATA or PATA? Can it do lightscribe? Etc..
The PSU, 1KW is kind of overkill, but a cheap 1KW is going to cost you unless you are hoping it lasts long enough for the warranty to run out. I'm assuming you're not a shady businessman like that, and are just trying, but not quite covering all your bases properly. So I along with everyone else is going to keep helping you until we see what we want you to have pretty much. We're trying to be customers, so you should damn well listen to our every quip and do your best to solve each one. That's part of the customer service end, and if you want to sell PC's get what we request done before you go trying to sell. I want to see you succeed, but you will be the one that dictates whether you gave yourself the best opportunity to succeed or not.

Also, still waiting on the post of the Warranty...It's not even posted on the website...

But cheers Ben, I have faith in you, and time will tell how things work out! :toast:

Also one last note, to better help you list in more detail and understand more of what I mean on some points, please check the link in my sig. It may give you some ideas, and you may find it useful!

With the system pages, I was going to make it simple so non-tech savvy people will understand it. Do you think I should add an option for an "Advanced Specification" on the page? And as for customisability, I sadi somewhere earlier I was working on that. Hopefully it'll be done soon. Anyway, let me know about the Advanced Spec page. Thanks.

To be honest with you that site you have would take me all of 10 min to do if that. I don't understand why you cant change the background to another color? If your using frontpage just set the bg to a different color and have that table you have set to bg color. You need to go with a darker color you only have a few pages on your site just change it lol. If I were you I would just get a free template for frontpage and rework it to suite your needs you will learn alot and have a way better site to sell your pc's.

P.S. Their is a real easy way to get dreamweaver without paying if you know what I mean...;)

Yeah, I know what you mean... but I want to do it honestly so I can't get sued. Anyway, I'm going to do a price recheck in a minute, so I might update layout when I'm done.

And as for customisability, I sadi somewhere earlier I was working on that. Hopefully it'll be done soon. Anyway, let me know about the Advanced Spec page. Thanks.

I would add a link of some sort, that would be a very good idea. Maybe just call it Details.

Then you can not only describe the component, but give that component a link to it's MFG's homepage. List warranty options, etc. Maybe depending on component and how much you plan on updating, you could set up a driver database for the items you sell that will be kept up-to-date, and keeping older releases. There are many routes you can go!

I wouldn't call it Advanced Spec Page though, could make it sound worse than what it really is which is just Details. Have a Click here for System Details link or button! I like the idea, and we'll see how it plays out.

Either way, you should have more of the basics listed on your basic page description page. The MB, the brands, the OS, etc. :toast:

Hmm... a driver database would be good, but as it's a shared server, I only have 150MB disk space. So... I could do a few drivers I suppose... but I'm not really sure. Maybe if I can sell 10, I'll consider doing that.

It would be a good idea to provide them, that way you're giving your customers an easy place to access the drivers for their components instead of having to go to each MFG's site for the driver release. That would add a lot to the work load, but would be a worthy option that would grant praise for your company.

Well, if you can't go big now, I still say go a little smaller, get rid of the TV Combo, do some more mid-range PC's, get the small sales too. Then you will be busier, since you're more affordable and if you can more easily afford to advertise, etc.

Also, get rid of that "head towards the light" image, it makes the page seem way too novice and that image (no offense to you) is kind of flakey. It doesn't show the professionality you want to display. You need a small, sleek, and easy interface that's clear, easy to read and has just enough good looks to it to draw attention. :toast:

If I still designed webpages I'd help you out, I used to have some good connections, and I used to do websites ground up from graphics to coding, but it's been almost 10 years since I played in that arena. So I don't have any of my old progz, and probably have lost my touch with building them! But keep up the good work!

OK, I'll work on advanced pages tomorrow, as well as mid- and low-range systems. And is the new advert up ther better, or do I need to think it out again?

Ben, big tip. Goto www.officelive.com and register a dot-com for free there. It's what I did when I started a PC company. Take a look at my old site, www.xixdesigns.com, I use it as a placeholder while I design my new site. The $1400 computer listed is about a year old (so the price is way off lol)...but it's a good example of what your setup should look like. And for anybody who wants to criticize my site out there, go ahead. Took me 10 minutes to make it, I've been designing a new one for some time now and I'm not releasing it until its finished. Another tip Ben, it doesn't look professional when your site is under construction. I'm not officially a business yet so everything I have up is for my reference and other people to help me out with. The link in my sig to my website is just forums for people to talk about stuff, it's not the website I've been working on :)
