at that res you wouldn't notice much in terms of real life performance, i dont suppose you could talk him into a single 3870x2 or maybe just 2 3850's in crossfire? also the two 3850 could hold him over for quite some time plus save him some cash so if he really wanted to, and the cards live up to the hype he could always go for a 4xxx series card

Eh, even an x2 would be overkill at that resolution. I would suggest a completely different build, but I won't cause it seems like he's already got the ideas for what he wants. 2 3850s now, saves $250 that would essientially be dead weight. Then he can get a better monitor and some more gpu's down the road.

Also, if he's doing some gaming on vista, I would highly recommend 4gb of ram. 4gpu's and 2gb of ram on vista, he'll wonder why some people at the lan parties still outperform his w/ cheaper systems........:shadedshu

I agree with farlex extremely about the ram thing. The 3850's while yes they're overkill they would also be a monumental waste of money if he's only using 2Gigs of ram anyway. Considering he's using a 64-Bit OS I'd definately spend the money on the ram instead. You can get 4Gigs (2 2x1 sets) for only $82.

I also agree about the wireless card being overkill when the wireless board is only $40 more and a wonderful board it is (I own it). I've never used the wireless (not a fan of wireless), but it has it and if he doesn't wanna use it then he can take it off. That'd also save you some loot on the wireless card.

As for video cards I'd say pick up 2 Diamond 3870's ($165 each before $15 mail-in rebate...each), that'd be a lot better than 4 3850's and might be able to help you on getting a slightly lower power supply as well. It'd also help ventilation in the case since there would only be 2 gpus BOTH with dual slots and less heat inside. Also 2 3870's is proven to make your e-penis longer than 4 wimpy looking 3850's or your money back ;).

Good luck with the build though...hopefully he finds some more fundage though as $1400 for a full blown spider setup is a pretty tight budget.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm changing the 4 3850's to 2 3870's and he's going with the Lian Li PC-60BPLUSII W and a carrying harness. I'll also add another 2gb and he is going with the wifi version of the motherboard since the non-wifi version just went out of stock.

Thanks for the help.

the motherboard has onboard WiFi - why not ditch the PCI wireless adapter? Althought the mobo is only capable of 'g' speeds, what is his router capable of? If it doesn't run 'n' . . . I don't see much of a point.

Thanks for the tip. I'll get rid of the extra wireless adaptor.

Dump this Linksys 802.11n wireless card- $70 and go wired maybe ? is that a option ?.

Edit Probably only save about $35 though.

Stick to wireless G unless you want to stream HD between devices. Save a few bucks...
