this morning when i came to turn on my rig it did a funny noise. kind of like a picking/ crackly noise. then when it came to type in my password the keyboard wont get picked up. (but it works when im in the bios) . iv tried starting it a few times...same thing happens. Also a couple time when i turned on my rig it will turn off. Then off for a second..Then turn on again...iv checked inside and everything seems fine as well..it was a little dusty but I cleared as mush as I could……

Did it cause any problems besides the sound thing and keyboard doesn't work? Like crashes more frequently, BSODs , corrupting files etc......... Try reinstalling drivers too and replug he keyboard/

sounds like something went wrong during the OS loading and the usb root controller can't detect your keyboard properly. Did you manage to type your password account now ?

edit : that's what i was afraid of, no login = no hardware troubleshooting, damn

Could you make sure your bios did not fall back to default settings, inadvertently disabling features ?

Try going to bios and change a setting called halt on all errors except keyboard. This bypasses any keyboard errors while booting (Don't know if you can move the arrow keys either). Or try plugging the USB Connector to another slot.

Also check if theres a setting called Keyboard present. Yes means the system will detect the keyboard is on. No means the system will assume there is no keyboard installed.

additionnaly, you could boot from scratch with no USB keyboard plugged, and when you reach the account screen, just plug it back and let vista 64 do its job ?

you don't have to be fully logged for pnp feature to work, it's already working on its own...

sounds like a good way to force device detection....

Have you tried resetting the BIOS, that usually fixes wierd issues like that for me.

Try entering with safe mode, then go to device manager. If your keyboard is listed more than once, uninstall it from each location then reboot. After reboot, unplug and replug your keyboard.. I've seen this issue with vista in other forums, hopefully that's it...

Ok, you mentioned you can use the keyboard in bios, just for giggles reboot and hold down your F8 key. When prompted (hopefully), go with your last successful boot.
