My work involves a lot of beeps and squawks, maybe you got a smoke detector with a low battery somewhere in the house? (this is also a common occurance in my line of work).

cant tell you how many times i crawled into attics to fix strange noises in the a/c to find it was the attic ventilator squeaking lol.

i even fixed the rattle in the a/c vent by tracing the sound to the upstairs metal ducting and removing their kids metal cookie tin he stashed in the floor vent in his room upstairs. the poor kid lost a big bag of sweet smelling weed too. the kids mom said she kept smelling weed but couldnt find it anywhere so she thought it was her imagination lol. that rattle sound started at the same time too lol. :p

Uploading that sound would be a great idea, but what if this sound would be something which none of us will recognize. Will it be worth the time ?
Btw you can wait a little bit longer and see what will happen to your pc.

A choke is basacally a "COIL", they are those "doughnut" looking things with a thick copper wire wrapped around them. Also in a square packge "laying down" inside a "box" some are totaly covered in plastic and come in a varity of collors. When the system is OC'd improperly or too far or mobo is "going out", they can emit a squeel, buzz, squawk, etc, niose. Normally caused by the component vibrating. Sometimes can be solved with a drop of glue(lol), or dropping the OC.
That noise is pretty common on my PCs. lol.

I took the above advice and let a lot of time pass.

In the meanwhile, I made various upgrades - changed cpu, changed psu and changed graphics card. For some weeks I ran the pc without the sound card too. The sharp chirping sound still happens.

It doesn't sound like an HDD sound. And I think were it a warning from a failing HDD it'd have quit within these two years... (I started this thread February '08)

Excluding HDD, cpu, graphics card, psu and sound card there's no other possibility but that the sound is coming from the motherboard.

It doesn't happen while I'm gaming or otherwise stressing the pc. More like after 30-60 minutes within being powered on and I'd be browsing the net - a loud chirp for a split second. And then it would happen like once again after another hour or so, or not at all for the whole day.

I resurrected this thread out of curiousity since now I know the culprit part by elimination: What on earth on my mobo could be making this sharp chirping/zapping noise? Someone asked if it sounded like an electrical discharge - well it does...

This is a posibility
also how is your wire management inside your case? Is it posible that a wire or a connector might be hitting a case fan? are you OCed?
