Futuremark Corporation today announced a new competition for PC overclockers everywhere. The contest will see game, DIY, and overclocking enthusiasts from Europe, Asia and the Americas competing for the “Lord of Overclocking” title for their region. With Futuremark anticipating over 200,000 entries the online contest will be the largest overclocking competition ever staged.

The contest will run from May 18th to June 14th with prizes on offer for the top weekly and overall winners in each region. Furthermore one overall top winner will also be invited to attend the MSI Master Overclocking Arena 2009 event in Beijing, China in September 2009.

Grand Prize include: MSI P45 Diamond motherboard and N260GTX VGA card, Huntkey X7 900W power supply, Thermaltake Element S pro case, GlacialTech XWing NB Cooling Pad, Enermax Apollo (8cm+12cm) cooling fans, Patriot Memory 3GB 1600Mhz Tri-Channel memory kits.

Weekly prizes include: MSI X58 Pro-E motherboard and N250GTS VGA card, Huntkey X7 800W power supply, Thermaltake V9 gaming case, GlacialTech UFO CPU Cooler, Enermax Cluster, Everest, Magma (8cm+12cm) cooling fans, Patriot Memory 3GB 1600Mhz Tri-Channel memory kits.

"Overclocking is growing in popularity all the time and on average we see a new benchmark result submitted to our database every 4 seconds. This worldwide competition gives people in three regions the chance to compete for great prizes. We will be surprised if records are not broken," said Jukka Mäkinen, Futuremark's Vice President, Products and Services.

"This is the largest overclocking event of its type we've ever seen. We’re delighted to be supporting overclockers everywhere with this community building competition," said Jason Lee, MSI's Marketing Director.

Contestants will be competing to see who can achieve the highest score with 3DMark06, a benchmark program from Futuremark that measures the 3D gaming performance capabilities of PCs. 3DMark software has been downloaded more than 45 million times. The 3DMark06 edition is currently the world’s most popular benchmark and can be downloaded for free from the Futuremark website here

The thing that gets me with these is that the people who win are people who have so much money to buy hardware capable of winning, its a waste giving them the prizes :(

It should be in groups or classes or something. I'm not going to even bother entering, whats the point.

    Exactly. This is BS.

It should be called "Lord of Performance" rather than "Lord of Overclocking."

The point, should be to OVERCLOCK whatever you already have to the highest degree. This, would of course include groups which specify types of cooling allowed, such as "Air", "Water", etc. But even then, it simply comes down to luck of having the best chip/board or the "expertise" to spread 20 fans across the cooler, turn the AC up and/or live in a particularly cold country. "I froze my basement with big tubs of ice cubes and won first place in the air-cooling competition."

So, yeah.. I'm not entering. Besides, I already have hardware better than the grand prize.

Even if I had the stuff to do this those prizes are lame. They should just use the money used on those and did cash prizes. They don't even have any AMD stuff :(

the way this shud be graded is , depending on certain cpu and how much overclock can one achieve , it shud not require u to have a xtreme cpu to win this , so if thats the case GL to all rich clockers

    You know what happens then?

"Intel Pentium E5200 Overclocking Challenge". We all rejoice. Then the professional overclockers come up with their LN2 Pots, chipset cooling, blah blah cherry picked hardware, and pull it off.

Cherry-picked hardware was my point against any kind of competition.

But LN2 would be placed into its own league.

Thing is how could they police it?

Not like your system specs show what cooling you are using during the test :(

In the same way that TPU moderates its FS/FT section?

Second-to-second? They probably have some way.

Some kind of video submission would be required in order to police it. Show the system doing what they claim with the cooling they claim.

It's impractical to set and enforce restrictions on what cooling people can use, if the evaluation is over the internet, and not in a hall.

let me add to that bhai jaan , they shud categorize to using three-four different methods , Air , Water Cooling aur LN2 and also Phase units.

its too broad of a competition , now i do have one idea i can represent Techpower up you all and i can pitch in to get a i7 955 extreme and we can win it ........ how about it ? u guys get the prizes i get to keep the cpu. =P (hay kay nah!)

I agree 100%. I don't even have the money to push my system to the limit. If by chance I blow my system trying I'll have nothing.

So true, try to level the field, like in auto racing, certain classes for hardware. Must make work, me want to play. :pimp:
