G.Skill ripjaws heat

G.SkillRipkaws ddr3 1600mhz with the red heat spreader. Are they prone to heat a lot or the heatsink is mostly for design? I want to install it in a Small form factor rig but it so near the stock oem stick that it could cut air flow on it. Will I have any heat problem on the Gskill if i remove the heat spreader?

They can run warm(depending on which IC is used), but it's not a heatsink--- it's a heatspreader. Memory ICs with different temperatures need different refresh rates. IF there is ample airflow, tehn no, it should not be an issue. If there is not a lot of airflow, it may still work, but chances are....

I can sort of check how warm they get running at 2133mhz 1.605 volts after days and days of running none stop but i will have to update my post later as need to pop out for a bit and fix a laptop.

Sorry for the delay in posting.

Have just checked to see if the ram sticks are warm and to be to honest they feel rather cool but they do kinda sit under a noctua NH-D14

I do a lot of gaming and stuff and the pc is on 24/7 so the ram does not get time to cool down at any point, current temp in my room is around 20c.

I've ran Ripjaws sans heatspreaders before with 0 issues, RAM is still running and stable. DDR3 doesn't get nearly as hot as DDR2 did. I've yet to have a kit of DDR3 need active mounted cooling or failure resulting from no heatspreaders. Though in most cases but (all but a few...where clearance was needed and we ordered kits w/heat spreaders instead of without) I run them with heat spreaders. With most modern builds, there's plenty of airflow...I wouldn't worry much tbh. Honestly, for most DDR3 kits, heat spreaders appear to be more for looks than for actual use. Most of the kits I've removed HS from were GSkill and Crucial.

I will just remove it then since on a Lenovo Thinkcentre M73 compact form factor there is the fan in front that brings the airflow near the memory.

Why not try and find out who it was and return it to them? After your thread with the encrypted USB drive wanting to decrypt it, and not turning it in to lost and found...this makes you look shady... just sayin'. Ethically it's the right thing to do dude. At least try to...and maybe you did, you haven't specified. But as I read it, you make no mention of it...and most folks would in the same sentence where they stated they found it.

In Canada, if the garbage/recycling was on private property, it's technically considered trespassing, not stealing. The only exception to that is if the dumpster or recycling bin is in a back alley or some other publicly owned property. Otherwise it's a violation of Canadian law.

However, for science, I have an extra G.Skill Ripjaws stick I can try overclocking and seeing if it runs warm. Native 9-9-9-24 1600mhz.
