No game really stood out this year as a strong GOTY for me, I had a lot of fun with many games, Borderlands is probably the closest. But Dawn of War II is a close 2nd, beyond that NFS Shift, Prototype, Trine, Evochron Legends, Killing Fields, WiC: Soviet Assault, Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc were all very fun. I enjoyed Borderlands much because it was a more enjoyable take on a serious situation, it had fun making fun of itself, and I like to get loot and shoot guns, so it all works out well. Dawn of War II had me addicted from the word go, plowed through the SP, which got really repetetive after about the first half, but was still fun to play, and the MP was just nuts, gotta say it's got ActionRTS with a dash of RPG down quite well...let's see what C&C4 has (I've been a C&C fan since the original release).

There were a lot of good games, but really nothing stood out as the amazing game to play or have. MW2 came close, but it came to the point if we couldn't fit my active clan on one side, we weren't getting it...I might pick it up in the bargain bin in a couple years (if CoD4's pricing is anything to go off of), but I'm really looking forward to next year's releases, most notably Dawn of War II DLC, Bad Company 2, Supreme Commander 2, and a few others. I missed a lot of big titles this year, but the ones I purchased I was generally happy with. The cool thing, is that I felt my money wasn't wasted, and to a gamer there's no better feeling than KNOWING you paid for a game you enjoy, whether it rates good or bad, or more hate it than like it, it still comes down to you enjoying it. So for 2009, it was a good year for gaming imo. And if I must pick a GoTY, Borderlands.

6 million + people can't be wrong.

Technically they can and quite often are :p

(not talking about MW2, just in general)

As for a 2009 goty, while there were some okay games, none were really outstanding enough to warrant any real mention.

Hmm, I've played a ton of games this year and many of them have held me for hours on end. But after reading Binges rant, I started thinking. Almost all the games I've played have been based on something I've played previously. Fallout 3, Dragon Age, Torchlight, Football Manager, Prototype, Total War etc...

So these are my nominations:

PC: World of Goo

Wii: Tiger Woods 10 (with Motion Plus)

I know Tiger is an old series, but the Motion Plus really makes it a great game.

PS. It wasn't Tigers fault!

What Codemasters did with their rally racing game is beyond me, Dirt 2 is a complete mockery of all the Colin McRae games that they made before it.

But the overall game of the year for me is TF2  I started playing this game again just recently and it makes MW2 multiplayer seem like a bad dream.

The only 2009 release I can nominate is Borderlands.

On a LAN party, we played co-op with 4 people, finished the entire storyline, that was such a good game experience it set a standard for me. Also, good co-op games for PC are rare. I'm glad to see one.

Buggy games lacking in features should not be nominated for goty :-.

GOTY must also be from 2009.

I saw a few 2008 titles in this thread like World of Goo which was released Oct 2008, and CoD 4 was 2007 if memory serves me. TF2 was also released in 2007 as well, along with World in Conflict, and supreme commander.

Not pleased with 2009 as a whole. I think I saw Prototype here... What the hell? You know it uses the SAME city map as one of the Incredible Hulk games? F*ck it's the same engine too... the last boss battle defeated the purpose of leveling up, and I also felt like I was mashing buttons at some points because anything would work. That's all I'm going to rant about because... this is all so frustrating, and even if I said my nasty piece about DAO people would still love it because it's new. Instantly something that seems decently polished is amazing as long as people haven't played it before, but I freaking have played the Fantasy genre to death. Hell I play table top RPGs every weekend, and our character development/story/game mechanics have more solid depth despite obvious flaws in White Wolf modules, or Call of Cthulhu...

After playing DAO I went back and played The Witcher. There were still broken 3D models, people's beards would leap off of their faces, and the mature content still seemed a little forced. Still despite all of that I felt much happier about the missions, dynamic, use of magic, the use of items, and the world in general. Paulieg I know I badmouthed TW but honestly I had good reason because I felt spoiled from all the good games I played. My eyes are opened.

Before I rant longer than I have the tolerance to complain I should mention that in my honest opinion as a life long gamer there need to be standards. For a game of the year there needs to be innovation above all else. This means the sights, sounds, interface, and plot should stay at the same level or exceed the precedent set by years prior and obvious advances in game play. I would never in a billion years elect a L4D as GOTY, and neither would I any heat to head shooter at this point. None of them, aside from TF2, can keep their fan-base, and create/expand environments to entertain the owner of the game. Bringing it back to L4D they made one new game-type and based a game around it. It's kind of like a single player game with replay value. That's amazing, but where are my other game types I know and love from other shooters? This may be lost on some people, and frankly I don't want to explain it to someone who can't tell this is happening. The message is if it works don't throw it out of the mix. To be a GOTY there needs to be innovation, and true innovation never ignores the past.

I agree. Its been a pretty crappy year for games.

100% agree with you on Shift. It certainly wasn't perfect on release with the weird bouncing physics of some cars/tracks and the dire performance on ATI cards, but since the release of patch 1.02 at the beginning of December the game has been transformed. I've been driving for 20 years, and no other game (and I include the Simbin titles) has engaged me like Shift does. Playing with a G25 is a pure joy. I hadn't played any games for about 3 moths before Shift came out as I was bored stiff, but Shift has really got me going again.

Sure, its still not 100% perfect, but its 95% there in my opinion. Unfortunately it can never gain GOTY status as its a little too sim like for the mass market (and a little to arcade for the sim crowd). I reckon it would have been better received if it hadn't carried the Need For Speed moniker.

I got hold of Dirt 2 from a TPU'er cheap, and whilst its a pretty game the style of it and the handling is just not up to scratch. Its fun for short blasts, I'll give it that, but its a bit of a disppointment really. The car models are way below Shift, in fact they don't seem to have progressed much from Grid. And the courses are too short. AND there are too many multi car races, whereas a rally game should be about point to point time trials which concentrate on fine car control and technical skill like the oldy but goody Richard Burns Rally:respect:

My vote would have to go to Batman Arkham Asylum because that is the only game this year I've gone back to play without hesitation. I just can't get enough of the Challenge modes:D

2009 games I played this year:

Prototype
Dragon Age: Origins
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (technically, it's a 2009 game for PC)

These are the 2009 games I played. I played a lot more 2008 games in 2009, though. Crysis, Crysis Warhead, GTA IV, Dead Space, Bioshock, Fallout 3 etc.

But from all the games I played on 2009, I'd say the best one was Dragon Age.

6 million people paying $60 USD for a game that was on sale a week later for $37.

I guess you're right, 6 million people can't be wrong! lol

:nutkick:

I would sure like to know where it was being sold for 37, because I never saw it.
