So I was wondering who people around here normally rent their "game server" from? How much are your paying? What are they giving you for your money?

There's so many games out there that allow you to rent, host, etc. for online play. But I'm sure there's only so many reliable game server hosts.

Reason I'm asking is I'm trying to convince my boss we should start doing such at an acceptable price that gamers can afford. We recently got a decent stock of Dual C2Q servers and I thought they'd fit the bill nicely.

I appreciate your input, if this works out right I might be able to save some of you guys some money. :D

I run a medium sized gaming community (10 servers) and use Nuclear Fallout VDS boxes for TF2 (and other Source games), Killing Floor and Minecraft.

Support is quick, servers are great and I pay around a dollar or less a slot by customizing my own virtual dedicated servers. https://www.nfoservers.com/

i buy a good upload speed from my ISP. i build a PC with a 10/100/1000 ethernet port on it. i then make a steam account that i use to control the game servers why? because the SDKs are free. i then set them to run on startup if the system goes down. buy a $60 UPC game time?

maybe you can give us TPU users a discount if this works out lol.

anyway only server I ever rented was BF3 servers on multiplay and it was around 1$ per slot monthly. (48players=$48). huge discounts if rented by quarterly/yearly

multiplay offers large numbers of game servers ranging from counter strike to minecraft to battlefield 3

Multiplay is probably decent if you do no customization to your servers, but they only let you install addons they approve (at least for Source games) and basically restrict almost all access to the backend of the server.

I'm against running servers from home (even though I do have a 45/30 FiOS connection) because even if you have lots of bandwidth at home, players will still have higher latency than a standard datacenter/colocation affair. Since I run a fairly professional community, ping (and server locations), uptime and performance are imperative for keeping your player base. Maybe not so much for Minecraft, but multiplayer FPS games really rely on those things. Once you get a good player base, maintaining the server rental costs via donations is pretty easy if you do everything right.

Just finished building GameServer01 and got it on the rack.

It's a 2x Xeon L5420 2.5Ghz Machine. This will be considered a Alpha test of sorts. I was thinking I'll let "dedicated" TPU users/gamers use it free for two weeks-month while I get these first kinks worked out.

What kind of game would you guys like hosted on it the most? You name it and I'll do my best to get it running. (During the testing process I will not be charging anyone. This will be a free server for all us TPU'ers to enjoy.)

I have another 3 of these systems I can have built in about a week. With any luck we'll be able to get TPU members faster, friendlier, and higher quality service than those other game server hosts. :rockout:

Also I can build servers like this or better very easily, so if this goes as planned and you want a server with better specs, let me know and I'll do my best to get it done. :D

BF3 or do you have to use one of their "official" servers?

EA has to approve you first I think. So it will be out of the question at the moment if that is true. I'll have to do some more research.

Source games are pretty easy to set up and commercialize if you're planning on it. All you use is Steam's HLDSUpdateTool with specific commands and you've got servers in a snap. They also support SourceMod which is an addon interface that you can get tons of plugins for. TF2 is free to play and has a pretty large user base.

I have a Counter Strike server set up now. My co-workers and I will be testing it these next couple of days, after that I'll give it an external IP and will be looking forward to having some TPU members help me test it out over the next week or so. :D

Anyone have preferences for what maps we should play on during testing? I'm nearly done setting it all up now the way I think it should be. Just need to fix a few more bugs, and give it an external IP. :D

Also, let me know what other games you guys would like seeing hosted.

    Thanks!

Hey Ed, you should PM me the IP when you have the external set man. I would be happy to jump in and do some CS:S! :)

If you need someone to run the CS server and set you up, I ran CS and CSS servers for years with AMXMODX and MANIMOD

I wouldn't use Mani on CS:S, as it has lots of security problems. SourceMod is the way to go if you need any mods.

Server is up, but in raw stages right now. Feel free to give me your feedback. Also, don't mind the bots, just there for testing purposes.

Hmmm. Well this is a West coast server. I'll see if I can have my boss prioritize traffic coming in via the ports valve uses. :toast:
