Update: Solved

Disabled onboard Killer NIC, enabled Intel NIC, and disabled forced HPET with bcdedit /set useplatformclock false

apparently EVGA motherboards don't play nice with HPET. thanks everyone for the help!

Hi all, I've recently built a new pc (specs in profile) and for some reason when I run Max Payne 3, a game that used to run pretty much flawlessly on my old sandy bridge i7 + geforce 560 ti, I'm getting absolutely unplayable framerates. I'm wondering if there's a way I can diagnose if something is wrong with my hardware, or if the game itself is messing up (and hopefully fix whatever's wrong).

Please let me know if you have any further questions or thoughts on the matter. I'll be checking this thread often to answer anything you guys ask or run whatever diagnostics you suggest.

edit: updated this post with some test results / temperature readouts

From what I've gathered thus far, my CPU is under performing for some reason.

temp test under load, showing poor performance in game

for some reason all my test results are half of what my friend's 6700k (clocked exactly the same) scores

CPU test results

GPU temperature and CPU usage while in game:

Is your monitor physically connected to the motherboard, or the GPU? It must be the GPU or you'll be using onboard graphics, which suck.

GPU for sure

I'm not sure if the game is even clocking up my CPU or anything to be honest. I tried to alt tab to look at the performance monitor in task manager and it was around 16% then went to 1% because I changed focus away from the program

Run it in windowed mode, that way you wont need to alt-tab away.
Can you download a benchmark, and check results, like heaven,or valley.
It will shows which hardware is rendering the 3d application
Also could dl gpuz to make sure your 970 is recognized

Which pci lane is you gpu in?top?

Also what driver are you running?

@jboydgolfer I'm not sure which benchmark to use. Heaven / Valley are just general benchmarks I can find wherever? I'll run them and post results

@Devon68 temperatures are never going above 40 on the cpu as far as I can tell, but I will check again

@puma99dk| running windows 7. I ran it on win7 on my last build and it was fine, so I'm not entirely sure if that's the problem but there could be some sort of tweaks specific to my hardware?

heaven HERE

but as @Frick posted, and i mentioned earlier, get on top of Driver cleaning, and verify that all the Driver related possibilities are out of the way.

THEN, try running a BM like Heaven, to see what your scoring. this will help tell whether your scores are similar to other 970's, and if they are, will tell us the issues lies with MP, and not your system.

That looks like the 970 is not running.

but running heaven will be of NO use if You dont follow the steps listed above.(just making sure)
you need to rule out Drivers as a source, then move on from there. Also is the 970 in the top PCI lane?

flashed to newest bios, uninstalled and reinstalled gfx driver with the suggested util, got the newest chipset drivers, too.

the 970 is in the top lane, yeah. it's saying that it's 16x gen 3.0 in gpu-z and in the bios. it's got both the 6 pin and 8 pin power cables plugged in to it...is it possible I plugged those in to the wrong ports on the power supply?

Just ran Heaven benchmark, here's the results, please let me know if these are abnormal or low:

Have you reinstalled the game?
just downloaded it off of steam, so it's technically a fresh install.

when you say the score's not bad, does that mean it's good or is it actually lower than it should be, out of curiosity?

It's actually fairly good. Not top 10 or anything, but is about where most people would be.

I wonder why my score is so low. i5-4690K with a 970 gets almost 800 more points?
