From what I've read a wrt54g with the ddwrt firmware you can adjust the xemit power or range to well over a half mile. With active cooling and modifications who knows what kind of signal strength is available.

how do you flash?

Go read on ddwrt. Search for them in google and read up on your router. they should give directions for everything.

Be careful if you get a Linksys WRT54G, after v6 I don't believe you can flash DD-WRT firmware onto it. Best bet is to check out their website and find an appropriate router in your price range that supports it.

QoS determines bandwidth by port and therefore by application. CounterStrike for example you would just set a high priority on the port range CS uses.

QoS is strictly Router side, not server side. It is nothing more than a port based packet allocation. By priority. Example, say you have a Voip phone service, and you like to talk ont he phone while playing WoW. You set the port range of the Voip into your router and set it to priority 1 or highest. You then set the port range of WoW to 2 or just below highest.
Now whenever you are on the phone and WoW at the same time, your router will send the Voip packets first, then WoW packets. Voip is highly dependent on latency while WoW isn't. Without QoS on voip your phone conversations while doing high bandwidth tasks would be of horrible quality, and would probably drop.

Freaksavior- I use a good old Linksys WRT-54G router with QoS. Gigabit ethernet has no affect on torrent transfers or web surfing, only on PC to PC transfers on your network, such as your pc to your dads. At 54mb/s you will not be limited by your wifi speed unless you are a long way away from the router, and get a poor signal. Only file transfers will be increased by going wifi N, but that carries the requirement of all devices have to be N.
Find a solid router that is supported by DD-WRT firmware. With the new firmware my routers signal strength can be increased 100fold if I have the proper cooling. Do some research and we will help as much as we can.

Very nice job >KennyT772....that easily earns a thank you

Is the wireless router a requirement of your network? If you are a serious Torrenter you will know that ping comes into play more just like in games. In torrents each file is split up into very small sections. Each section when completed is never redownloaded. This is called file hashing where data is stored into its individual section like a hash table. This allows faster data searching as well. But the key thing is when someone is sending you a file they need to know if you already recieved the segment from another another user. Once the segment is finished packets are sent to the current servers that are sending you that same segment/packet. The faster that you can communicate full segment / next segment to the severs the better it is for your download. Depending on how big your torrents are and how many segments it is split into determines how much time you save per download.

The reason why I ask if a wireless network is necessary is because Wireless networks do extra work. The reason is because of security. They first capture your MAC address which is local to all of your network cards. Then they require the WEP key. Every packet that your computer sends out contains a encrypted key at the beginning of it. This is both the mac address (to differentiate which computer it is) and the authorization of entry into the router. Those keys are put at the very front of the packet. The reason for this is when the packet is read by the router it then removes the key and address to just the packet itself before sending it out. If you have less information to remove from your packet it will be faster (ie Wired Router since it dosent have to remove the authorization key).

The next thing about wireless routers is packet loss. Of course may get packet loss with wired as well it is much more evident with wireless routers. Packet information is numbered in sequential order. So say a piece of data is split into 4 packets. They are each numbered at the beginning of the packet to differentiate the information inside the packet. There are differences between Iternet Protocols too. When the first packet is recieved the server will be waiting for the 2nd packet but if it sees the 3rd packet instead here is where the different protocols come into play. UDP uses whats called packet sequencing. This is the numbering of packets. When the packet is recieved on the server side the server sends a packet back to the client saying that the server recieved it. Or else UDP will continue to send the packet the server sends a reply packet back. TCP however is different. It dosent use sequencing. The order that you send out your packets is the order it expects to recieve its data. So if your packets dont arrive in order which can happen with mainframe routers rerouting information through less stressed routers(these are the carriers of internet traffic) , then TCP dosent know what to do with the data that you just gave it. all it knows is that there were 4 parts of information that it was supposed to recieve and it is 1, 3, 2, 4.

The data will be processed through the program but as you may know since packet information is usually expected to be in a certain location TCP will not reorder your packets for you. Here lies where you get a disconnection error from the server when it dosent know what you just sent it or lag time when it tries to determine what you just sent it and information is sent back to the client saying to resend the last 4 packets that were corrupted data.

It all depends on some major things that you have to consider before really looking into routers. Its not just saying oh the router is 802.11n and its all good... Its still in draft for your information... Wireless rounters cannot compete with ried routers no matter how you put it. But if you have to go with the wirless if you can have an extra wire or two for ethernet go with a gigabit router. Wireless should always be your last option. I hope this wasnt too confusing.

wow Nothgrin, that was actually really informative... I can't believe I read it all tho, really long and daunting.

I'm gonna look into that firmware flash thing. If I have a network already setup, will flashing it require me to re-setup the network? Or will it be fine as long as the computers' information stays the same?
