I plan on doing a completely new build some time after the new year, after CES, due to wanting to see what new tech will be coming next year, that we don't know about.

Current build:
Asus Crosshair Formula V
AMD FX-8350
Corsair Hyrdo H80i
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz CL 9
Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W
2 x Asus GTX 660 DirectCUII OC (One is a Top Edition) in SLi
Corsair Force LS 120GB SSD
2 x WD Black 1TB HDD

Potential Build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4k7kqs

Now, the question:
Is it really worth going through a complete upgrade that will last me nearly a decade (shout out to 1136 users out there), or wait it out for AMD (I genuinely do love their price per performance) and just go for a GPU upgrade that will get bottle necked by not only my processor, but also by my aging PCIe 2.1 lanes?

DDR4 just hit the market, and AMD, at the earliest, won't have anything to support it until next fall, but most likely won't have a truly new FX chipset until 2016 (hence the waiting for CES). DDR4 will be around for quite some time, and PCIe 4.0 will get announced in depth, until some point in 2016 as well (based off of what I could gather from PCI-Sig/Wikipedia). By switching teams from Red to Blue, I know there are a plethora of perks, as well as some drawbacks (noticeably, the price).

Please provide only constructive comments and advice. While I'm a huge AMD fan, I also dislike knowing that even if I buy a great card, it could potential sealed away due to other hardware limitations. Case and point, my laptop is -almost- as fast as my desktop. Intel i5-4200M, 6GB DDR-1600MHz, 2 x GT 755 in SLi, 1TB (with 8GB ssd) hybrid drive, and it can almost play games as well, and in some cases better, than my desktop at home. o_O;;

I see literally no point in upgrading anything bar your GPU. That machine will still play games.
Maybe buy a Devil's Canyon i5 and a Z97 MoBo if you want, but everything else in that system smells like it will last a long time.

Never gonna happen!

DDR4 just hit the market

DDR4 is literally irrelevant. It has no bearing on games, and is horribly overpriced.

aging PCIe 2.1 lanes?

Thank you very much RCoon. Gaming isn't the only reason I was going to do a system build, but I also do video editing at home, and hoped the DDR4 would make it more efficient. I know the prices are insane right now, which is why I plan on waiting 4-6 months before making my decision. :)

Again, thank you for your input, it is dully noted and being carefully considered. :)

Also, I was going for SLi, as I'm slightly addicted to it, as is Adobe. :(

In that case, just grab yourself a devils canyon and a 970 or something. RAM is still relatively obsolete above 1600CL9 16GB. Just get an SLI certified motherboard for sure.

I'm not sure what software you're using that makes you think faster RAM makes it more efficient though. The only thing that accelerates encoding is the processor, or in Vegas' case, a bit of CUDA acceleration.

RAM buffer is nice, but the speed is relatively irrelevant due to IO speeds of the storage you're reading and writing from. If anything, get a dedicated SSD for video files in limbo (being read from, and to be written to). It's always been a common practice to record to a different hard drive you're reading from, it vastly improves speeds.

Your pc is fine i see no reason for an upgrade but if you do devils canyon and 970 is a good idea. Spending your money on ddr4 at the moment is pointless.

+1 on all points
with some remark. if you decide to stay with your current cpu (and oc it till water in that h80 starts to boil) change ram with 1866 or 2100 one. amd cpus and apus (especially apus) love higher ram clocks.
if you go with i5 1600 ram will be perfectly fine.

throwing money on sli and 4k res is a bit pointless. 4k is in rather raw state (tn panels with bad view angles and pale colors for 60hz refresh o_O ) if you like high res better go with 1440p or 1600p for which one 970 will be enough. there are 21:9 1440p screens (cant remember lg or samsung it was) whitch might require 2nd 970 but other then that one 970 will be enough for at least 1.5-2 year (could be even much more if game devs dont catch up with new tech).

Here is an updated proposal:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DJ2tkL

Adobe, with the Cuda tweak (http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5-2.htm), max out both of 660's, which is fine. Switching to DC gives and even running SLi on 970's, gives me a noticeable drop in power draw. *sigh*

Perhaps I should just snag a single 970 for now, and watch what happens at CES, who knows, maybe the next iteration of GDDR will be announced and come out with the "big" Maxwell and R7/9's...

Also, you think my H80 should definitely be upgraded for my 8350? I mean, the idle temp does hover around 40C on stock clocks. Bumped up to 4.4 and it would stick around 43C-45C.

those temps are fine. add 2100 or 2400 ram and try with 4.6-4.7
h80 is ok just boil it up a bit with higher oc ;)

For sure, my H80i can keep the 8350 stable at 4.8Ghz, but that's at around 1.45-1.475v. Depends what volts the OP is putting through it.

Stock, so it varies from around 1.2-1.362 (or 1.326?) lol, The CFV has been a great board for me, I just get nervous with adjusting the voltage because I'm worried I could make it go "ping" and be out a board and cpu. haha, And when you talk about adjusting the voltage, you're talking about the cpu/nb voltage, correct?

I've got a CHVF, honestly you don't need to play with everything so much on Vishera. Just knock the vCore up a touch. Don't go playing with the NB voltage too much, that can only take so much.

Set "CPU & CPU/NB" to manual, and adjust the first core voltage option, NOT the NB voltage option below it.

Roger that, will give it a shot at home. Are you using the stock fans on your H80, or did you swap them out for something else, are they controlled by the pump or by the board? And which "preset" are you using?

Stock fans, they have a higher static pressure than anything on the market besides Nidecs and SanAces. Sure they're loud, but they're performance fans.
They plug into the block, and the block plugs into the CPU FAN header on the motherboard. I stick them on level 3 mode (the loudest).

Honestly you can google OCing on boards like the V Formula, mighty easy to OC the 8350 on the 990FX chipset IMO. Not as complicated as Haswell refresh.

OK, I was going to fiddle with OC'ing my RAM, since I read a TPU review on the RAM I am using (12GB kit instead 2 x 8GB, 2x4gb per, kit). If I were to loosen the timings to 9-10-9-24, I could go up to 2000, however, my motherboard won't let me input my own speed, just gives me a drop down box. *sigh*

I can't get to intensive with OC'ing the CPU right now (10-14 hour work days), and going sailing this weekend.

Anyway, thanks for the tips guys!

I say BAAAAD idea brutha! That's a WHOLE lotta cash for something that will shortly thereafter be dwarfed by better components gaming wise, and at better prices too. You don't NEED 8 cores for gaming, and it will be some time before even hex, let alone octo threading becomes common in games.

If this is primarily for gaming, forget 2011-v3, go LGA1151 and Skylake, which will be the first budget platform & CPU supporting DDR4, and by then DDR4 latency and prices will be lower. By then we'll also see W10 and Dx12, and the best part is, Nvidia's Pascal will be out with stacked DRAM, unified memory, NVLink, and Dx12 support.

You're going to be seeing supercomputer level graphics in small form factor sizes. 2016 will be THE year for building and major upgrades. Hell, you have two pretty good 660s. As long as you don't go crazy on the res, you'll be able to hang till then.

I have a 7970, which I've had just under two yrs, on an aging Nehalem X58 platform with stock i7 950 and 8GB 1600 RAM, but it's still holding it's own. I was almost sure I would pop in a 970 with a 4790k and 16GB DDR3 end of next year, then I read about Pascal, Skylake, etc, and decided, what the hell, I'll likely be able to do that maybe within 6 months after I was going to go with a 1150 upgrade.

The rule of thumb anymore in high tech gaming is, if you're going to do a major upgrade, time it well and get new tech, vs getting good prices on old tech. You'll thank yourself for it years on down the road.
