If you're swapping out motherboards and CPU's then yes i would definitely recommend reinstalling your OS.

And remember you can always back up your data if you want.

Now if you're saying to just reinstall your OS on your current system, well, i guess you'll see a slight increase in performance in some circumstances, but there's really no point in a reinstall if everything is running smooth. How many programs or files you have shouldn't effect benchmarking or gaming, so really i wouldn't much of a point in your case. But just for ease of mind, you can do it just to clear the system up a bit.

No. What other places can you buy motherboards in New Zealand or ship to NZ?

When you overclock the Core, you are also overclocking the Shader.

I'm not to sure if you can unlock it though. In EVGA Precision, i am unable to.

AFAIK you cant unlink at all with Fermi based cards, core/shader will always oc together, and I believe at a 1:2 ratio too.

I'd definitely do a windows reinstall Mavvs.

wolf: i also noticed that when i overclock high, the games performance degrades, i get lower fps!!!

why is that? it wasnt like that with my old GTS 250.

is it because its Fermi based card?

if i overclock the memory too high, i get lesser performance than before.

The Fermi cards are so sensitive or its just my card?

core clocks too high could cause bad performance, like in the same way as an artifact but it's dropping frames instead.

also GDDR5 is error correcting if memory serves, so if you clock it too high instead, of artifacting it takes another cycle or so to correct the frame and keeps on going.

having owned two GDDR5 cards, the best way to test is to set a known stable core clock, and just oc memory 10mhz at a time rebenching with 1-3 apps until you see performance degrade.

EDIT: having said that, 1000-1050mhz is plenty enough already.

erocker: www.etccomputers.co.nz.

also my cpu at 3.00ghz now is bottlenecking the card?

and www.pricespy.co.nz

Pricespy has some good ones. How much money can you spend on it?

At 3ghz your CPU isn't a bottleneck to be concerned about.

i dont get artifacts, but i get performance decrease.

The GDDR5 on your video card has error checking. If it's overclocked too much it is designed to throttle the performance, thus dropping your performance.

i can spend up to $150 NZD to $180NZD.

tomarrow i will swap the card to another MSI card.

to clear out any issue that is based on the card itself.

but overall i am very sad and dissappointed in performance of 460.

i thought i would get double the performance of my GTS 250 but it not the case at all. and i paid $400 for it.

do u think in the future it will improve with newer games?

:(

If he's overloading one of the rails on the PSU it's quite possible.

Hit the nail on the head there, it's his PSU. he downclocks the CPU, that gives him slightly more margin votage wise on the GPU. I'm not saying there isnt enuff amperage there, just that as you mentioned, a rail may be faulty.

Tatty_One: so better buy a new better PSU then?

how about these?

which one of these give enough power on the rails for my system?

which one of these suits gtx 460 and my system?

i lost my previous PSU. it died on me. and upgraded to silverstone 560w 4 months ago and having problems now :( .

but it all started with the 460.

Tatty_One: so the rails are the problems and not the pure power wattage?

i mean the PSU supports up to 560w power, so should be more than enough for my system. so just the rails dont give enough power???

I would choose GX650w because it has the most powerfull 12v rail and all of them cost the same
  1. cm gx650w 12v@52a
  2. antec ea650w 12V@45a
  3. cm extreme pp 650w 12v1@18a+12v2@18a

One big rail is good and that GX will be more than enough, your symptoms indicate a faulty or ineffective PSU, difficult to say which excatly, as ERocker has said, that PSU of yours SHOULD be more than enough but your symptoms do suggest it's the PSU, I would get the GX to be safe, when you get it be careful when you unpack it, install and test, if it does not solve your problems, see if you can send it back!

Tatty_One: yes. also i want to upgrade my case because my current case is out of shape and very compact. which of the listed cases above u recommend me to get?

also the ineffective PSU can make the GPU to underperform or something?

because i have this feeling that the gtx 460 is underperforming or something too. not much difference than my old GTS 250.
