So you're saying that the 850w will deliver the same amount of power as the 1000w? That doesn't really sound right to me, not that I am an expert. I mean I went to college, wattage is wattage. I figure if they say it can deliver 850 and my rig needs 1100, something aint getting power... am I wrong on how these things work? I just don't want to find myself having to buy a 1000 watt PSU down the road when I want to upgrade is all.

Did you not see my calculation above? You will need less than 850w even with trifire under usual conditions. Newegg's calculation is based on average quality psu, where if you stress to near maximum load it will crap out on you. However, if you want to play safe (too safe I must add) the Tuniq is really not as bad as I portray it as.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_5870_PCS_Plus/27.html

Chart here says that a 5870 takes about 158w for heavy load, only when super stressed it takes 212w for the vanilla flavour. If you trifire, you will need 212*3=636w, leaving you with about 200w for the rest of the components at maximum wattage. 850w is still more than enough for your needs.

I saw these, but your glancing over the 200w of other components, the processor alone seems to take 130 W (200+ if OC'd to 4000mhz at 1.3 V) then add the fans and HD and Optical drives, I just don't see how you are figuring to get all that to fit into the 200w left over from the 3 GPU's. Am I missing something or is my math wrong?

I guess maybe you overestimated the 3 GPU consumption as stated later and maybe 3 GPU trifire doesnt consume 600w?

Yup, I grossly overestimated the power requirements, according to W1z's charts peak power is about 150w, 3 adds up to 450w, leaving you with about 400w. Hope that helps :). Also, if you plan to oc your chip, then get an aftermarket cooler. Otherwise, get an aftermarket cooler.

HAHhaha

Yea, I think after hearing you guys and doing some PSU calcs out there I am starting to feel more comfortable with a decent 850w. Do you still think the one you have specced is the best out there dollar and performance-wise?

Also we kind of ran off track, what about the Mobo's? I have a vote in on the Giga UD3, anyone out there think the ASUS or EVGA is better?

So I was just looking at the Corsair 850 and I see it only has 4 PCI-E 6+2 pins.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009&Tpk=corsair 850

It looks to me that the 5870 takes two 6 pins for power from the pictures.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Image... x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

I know this is a stupid question, but are both of those necessary to be plugged in? Is one a back-up? I just want to make sure that there are literally enough connections to plug 3 GPU's in.

I would assume with a high end PSU like this it would have enough connections, but better to ask now than be sorry later

Yes. All of the 6 pins are required to be plugged in. I think for tri-fire you would need to use molex to 6 pin adapters to power one 5870

Ok, that's what I was wondering, I saw that there was such a thing, but I wanted to make sure that was doable. I have absolutely no superior knowledge on PSU's so I just wanted someone in the know to tell me it was possible. I didn't know if you could only use 6 pin connections because it provided a certain specific voltage or amperage or wattage or whatever....

Ok so I am going to put the purchase order in within the next 5 hours probably, I think I've hammered down the PSU to the Corsair or another reputable 850w PSU (was thinking maybe the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153106). Also probably going with the CM HAF 922 as proposed by Fourstaff for the case.

I still need to hammer out this mobo though. Do I go with the

EVGA 141-BL-E757-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX X58 SLI LE Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188049

ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131359

Gigabyte X58A-UD3

Appreciate the help guys

On the recommendation of Paulieg, I would recommend the GB X58A-UD3...I am an AMD guy myself, but I would follow Paulieg's advice. He knows.

Order placed!

I went with the EVGA SLI LE. After looking at reviews that board just seemed to me to be equal to or greater than the others. Also it was the cheapest by $25 after the MIR.

So my last minute changes are this:

Went with EVGA SLI LE as opposed to undecided MoBo- savings $25
Went with Corsair Dominator RAM as opposed to the listed Corsair XMS3- no cost increase due to $20 MIR and $10 Inst. Reb. on the Dominator RAM
Went with the HAF 922 case as opposed to Lian Li case- savings of $40
Went with the Corsair CMPSU 850 as opposed to Tuniq- no cost change with MIR
Went with the Caviar Black in the 640 GB size as opposed to 750 GB size due to a promo code I found- savings of $50 total

Also I ended up purchasing all the parts at NewEgg except the i7 930 and the optical drive which I purchased at Super Bizz (ewiz.com) which saved me around $35

Total savings was around $150 in last minute changes.

My total Rig costs come to $1492.89 all in, BUT that is not counting the $80 I have coming back to me in MIR hopefully. So actual cost of rig was $1412.89. I am going to pick up Win 7 Pro from the Microsoft ultimate steal website for $65 which will bring the total cost of the rig to 1477.89, still below my $1500 price point.

The only thing I know people will say is that I am foolish not to have bought an after market heat sink, but if I find my temps to be alarming w/o OC then at that time I will buy me some Arctic Silver as well as the cooling tower Fourstaff pointed out. And when and if I decide to go OC then I will buy the cooling tower as well.

WHEW!! I can't wait, BFBC2 here I come!

So anyone want to throw out some sweet a$$ games I should be looking to buy now I finally got my rig coming?

My current list:
BF BC2
Settlers 7
Crysis 2 (when it comes out)
Just Cause 2
