GTX 780 Ti will be louder, more power hungry and faster (not much averaged but more consistent frame rates due to memory bus). You certainly have a PSU for it. 780 Ti is a flagship Kepler. 970 is a cutdown midrange Maxwell (great card for what it is).
I'd go for GTX 780 Ti especially knowing that some of the 970 cards are made cheaply and that's less likely to be the case with 780 Ti.

Yes i watch a lot of benchmarks i think 780 ti ghz edition win 970 but the problem is 780 ti doesn`t have dx12 ..

Yes i agree everything that u write. I have cooler master v1000 psu will be enough. I change 3 times card 980 with coil whine. Now i spend a little money and i can get these cards. The only problem is 780 ti doesn`t have dx12. What are u think in that case ?

Yes, and i think next games will need dx11, because game engine don`t have dx12 right now .. am i right ?

"I’m sure it will work better than trying to use all 4gb of VRAM on the 970"

you should buy a gpu that is cut from a good mold and not being dragged into court if your thinking about the future and getting the most out of your money
what is known for sure is that dx11 gpu's will support the cpu optimizations baked into dx12 and that is exactly what next gen api's are all about
if your worried about having every single dx12 feature then you should wait until microsoft actually says what all of them are before you upgrade

LOL, what?
Oh come on, with Maxwell being so power efficient there are models out there with all kinds of VRMs because production price reduction. Some of these models are even factory OC-ed and they throttle happily after vrm gets hot.

Well, here is my take on the situation and what I would do:

Between the two cards, I would probably go with the GTX 780ti because its a more powerful card in the end of the day and for the same price its best to get the most power you can. If your going at 1440p or below either will perform about the same in more situations than naught with the 780ti breaking out. You can overclock the 780ti very well also just the same as you can overclock a GTX 970 so the performance lead will still sit on the 780ti especially if you get a nice factory overclocked model.

If that happens, the certainly avoid those models, but I would imagine it is few and far between and perhaps reserved only for the smaller sized PCB models which a reference based?

That's something that has been happening since there are VRMs in GPUs. Also, a VRM getting hot doesn't mean that the VRM is bad, it could also mean that VRM cooling is completely wrong, which is something that has been pretty obvious on certain aftermarkets on this 9xx nVidia series.

Every single nVidia and AMD series had a couple of aftermarket cards with VRM issues. Also, I prefer throttle (something that appeared circa 5000 series on AMD, can't remember on nVidia) instead of fried cards.

Not neccesarily no. Bad heatsinks, bad airflow, blower-style coolers. Getting hot is a matter of phases, components, etc. Cooling them is a way different issue, and even a big PCB with 3x coolers can fail to cool them properly.

Of course, but generally, the larger PCB's offer a bit more room for VRM heatsinks. Not always, but generally. There are always exceptions. ;)

They managed to put a new BIOS pre release, else it would have been a disaster. Consider that the best cooled VRM ones are on Gigabyte's G1 (3 fan setup) with around 77.96ºC and even Asus Strix WITH backplate, short PCB and 2x fans managed 78.92ºC.

Also, inno's torture tests showed 55ºC on GPU temp. Considering that other cards were at 61-70ºC then yeah, sometimes horrible bad calls are made on VRM cooling and this shorter the span of the cards BY A LOT. Palit one also showed 103º+ on VRMs.

Picking the right aftermarket is a must. My old 7950 with blower-type crashed from VRM temps, so yeah, 125º+

970, save the money for big Maxwell. (if you can afford 780Ti, why not 980 -- but maybe you are looking at used card market.)

between those to cards, I would go for GFX780TI in a heartbeat. Fully locked up core, proven tec that works the way its supposed to. The difference in electricity cost dosent mean a thing taken over a years use.

Hey hey!!! Exceptions I said existed! *golf clap*.

Good thing VRMs are good to such high temps anyway. ;)

If both at same price then 780ti. 970 isnt thought to replace 780ti honestly as it can only be truly replaced by 980. Since 980 is above budget then don't hesitate. As for DX12 and other features... I do not think they are worth the small lose on performance, but it's up to you. Oh, also, the main features (mainly improved performance) from DX12 will not need a new gen card like 780ti, probably the most irrelevant features will be new gen exclusive.

Hey hey!!! Exceptions I said existed! *golf clap*.

Good thing VRMs are good to such high temps anyway. ;)

That 124.9 was pretty close to crashing. The hotspot was on the PCB, which means that the VRMs were actually a couple of ºs lower... still, unless something has changed on this new series 125ºC is enough to crash the card and/or activate the safety measures.

As I understood. Dude doesn't own a 780ti... between the two, I'd still get a 970 and run that thing for a couple years.

@ Deammon - Again, an exception. Awesome find. ;)

You missed that he returned three 980 cards because of the coil whine ... I somehow doubt he'd be happy with 970. That gigabyte 780 Ti should have less coil whine and with windforce cooler shouldn't be too loud either.

Get the 780 Ti, no question.

It's a little faster, but also it doesn't have that memorygate issue so on principle I wouldn't buy the 970 for this reason alone.

I have the MSI GTX 780 Ti GAMING. It's such a fantastic card and so quiet that W1zzard ended up using it in his own rig after the review! Check out the conclusion here. I got mine based on this review and it didn't disappoint.

I, for my part, will be replacing my personal system's ASUS GTX 670 Direct CU with the MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming as it's the best card I've reviewed in a long time.

There are now even better versions out there with even quieter coolers. I think there's an Asus Strix one which turns off the fans completely in desktop mode and is even quieter when gaming.

Finally, the 980 is faster than the 780 Ti and doesn't have the memory issue, so I'd recommend this instead of the other two, if you can get it and comes in an Asus Strix version too. It all depends on price and what you can afford.
