That is to be expected, runs okay for the most part but shadow distance really kills performance so running ShadowBoost could help you keep frames more stable, that is if you are having any kind of stutter.

I am still asking myself. Why I didn't trade-in the card for a different model... I still have faith that maybe this issue is resolved once and for all.

For a long time i was thinking about flashing another card bios. Today is the day that i flashed this bios : https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/177430/sapphire-r9380-4096-150914.html
I get the more stable 60 fps in games like battlefront, gta 5, but still in game like gothic 3 gpu work on 60-70% usage on 500-600 mhz and next to 60 fps drops appears too.
I m going to test it for a little and try the msi for next shoot.
This is prove if someone doesnt believe xd:

EDIT: As it is said its overclocked to 1050, 1600 with +30mV and 20% power limit in MSI Afterburner
EDIT2: And of course i got my own patern for fans

You both can hit a wall...

Well... I had a GB7970WF3... and their revision 2.1 with their VRM. (First ones were okay, with stock VRM, then GB cheaped out again)

Basically that VRM allows only few bit settings (min/max and a middle random bit) and the current limits are hardware set via OCP feedback route. As soon it will hit it, it will floor it... the more voltage you give the more it will throttle.

So you can flash yourselves blue... with any bios you want... it wont help... i did a hardware mod a replaced resistors to my desired voltages and current...

For you gentlemen... return your cards and get a proper Sapphire at least...

I tested mine a while ago and i agree with you. I just for my curiosity change the core voltage from +30 to -70 and i get atmost every time 1050 MHz that never happened before ! also FPS has raised !
If i could i had return it a long ago but i only got warranty and cant give it back to store bc in my country you only have 2 weeks for return.

Tell it drops display, switchess off... if they reject it, do it 3 times and they will have to replace it... tell that you have lost faith in AMD and chose an nvidia...

You are from Poland, aren't you? Well Consumer laws in EU aren't that bad... There must be a limit of repairs when the retailer must exchange the product. At least in Latvia we have such laws, and if not usually the manufacturer RMA repair contract holder like your Regenersis for example has to change the device, because they are not paid for the re-repairs... They will give you a conclusion and the seller will have to compensate you as he see fit and offer you a deal. There are many things they can do, but... don't loose faith... hire a retired lawyer, he might get on their nerves just for fun.

Can someone give me a tip on how to flash the MSI or Sapphire bios? ATIflash and gigabytes software just give obvious errors due to mismatch.

It will be okay. Just another lesson learned about consumer electronics.

Meanwhile testing new custom bios... And I have a new GPU stable error free max. But I always I ask myself when running OCCT... why in hell... it looks like that...

Looked at all the recent replies, I was "testing" Borderlands 2 for... oh only 3 days. As BL2 at max isn't demanding when you look at less detailed areas GPU clocks would drop for a second and go back up and during this the screen would freeze for that amount of time.

I've learned to live with the card as the downclocking part seems to be only interrupting when most of the GPU power isn't required. But it's annoying as hell when it decides to do it mid-gameplay and start hitching. Some games made before 2013 just don't like when the GPU drops it's clock speeds like this.

At least I got the best performance for dollar card for 2015 Q3-2016 Q1 for the display resolution that I play at. It's a shame that prices over here are up the a** compared to US. For my money I would have gone with the 290 which is another sweet-spot card but it's hard to come by now because it's off the online retail shelves.

@Ferrum Master
Greetings from Lithuania! Haven't seen much of people around here that are from the Baltic states.

Gonna get the newest OCCT and be a little nasty to see if I can get Radeon overclocking right, hopefully my PC part retailer doesn't mind.

I remember one of the companies not too long ago had "special" cards that were binned and tested for their max overclocks and the retail box would come with the exact numbers at which the card was stable. That's another con of the G1 series, they were tested for stability and higher boost clocks, but at what voltage and boost clock exactly? Who knows!?

Ok just got a Black Screen of Death when I alt-tabbed out of Borderlands 2 in borderless fullscreen mode, it didn't happen before. Games in borderless fullscreen in general tend to do this very often with this card.

@Szkupek
Good luck, in the mean time I am also messaging my retailer, so I can come to some sort of agreement.

Another problem is that drivers are highly susceptible to crashes with WIndows 10, as mentioned the borderless window mode has issues sometimes for me. I read that if this mode is selected, Windows gains some exclusive control over what happens with the window. So I'll try to play with borderless some more and switch to fullscreen if the driver goes decide to give me a BSOD again.

On another topic. Overclocking potential is really good running at 1100MHz Clock 1500Mhz Mem and 15% Power Limit. A shame I don't have a game that uses this effectively. Because as soon as the game requires less of the GPU, the GPU rubberbands the clocks and voltage, I think this is really unhealthy to electronics as a whole.

I am torn between the MSI and Sapphire models for the exchange. While the Sapphire does seem to have good cooling overall including the VRM, something some manufacturers don't do for some reason but the cons are alleged worse overclock capability because the temperatures are higher compared to other models, except ASUS one, it is the king of having VRM temps go up past 100c+, and they say it's OK for them to run like that, I don't buy it when considering the longevity the card is supposed to have.

The MSI model does have fans that turn off if the GPU core isn't hitting a certain temp, its con is that a lot their cards seem to have more prominent coil whine, even when you're not pushing the GPU too high.

Gigabytes on the other hand was the best of both worlds but ruined by this issue that I wasn't aware of until I experienced it myself.

So the board partners are like... Go ahead, pick your poison. This adds to the debate that manufacturers do this so you would have to buy a new product at least after 2-3 years. Why skimp on such simple things that almost destroy any possibility of the consumer having a good experience. I thought they had enough time to learn from mistakes. I'll just quote "Business as usual". I guess that's their excuse, FML.

Okay, I think I am going to finish this thread once and for all. For anyone having problems with power management when playing games under 200/300 series of Radeon cards I can only recommend using RadeonPro (outdated but still works with Rx series cards if you're using the beta) or the recent ClockBlocker program, you can get both from Guru3D right now.

http://www.comroestudios.com/ClockBlocker/Doc/index.html - This is all you need to know.

This helped me whole lot and I am surprised that nobody even mentioned these tools at all, like they don't exist or I was supposed to know to use these from the very beginning. Now I know, and I came out a little brighter than before about the latest Radeon cards. Finally I'm relieved that I can game the f**k in peace.

I was sick of my friend rubbing the nVidia master race stuff in my face with his shiny new 750Ti, (also from Gigabyte).

Still this doesn't change how I feel about Gigabyte branded Radeon GPU's, I'm looking at you R9 380!!!

Despite the awful experience I've had maybe, just maybe after a few good years with the card I'll be able to put a ring on it so to speak, and it will take a place in hardware that is beloved by me, along with pretty much all of the nVidia cards that I've had over the years, since this is my first ATI/AMD card that I have owned.

Well a 750 Ti isn't really anything to compare to a R9 380 so I'd just laugh at him, saying something like this. ;) Anyway, you'll manage it and maybe the card gets better over time. Good luck

I know I am a bit late to the party but I must say I am very disappointed in my Gigabyte R9 380 G1 gaming card. I am now busy with my 4th RMA of the card in 2 years. Each time it seems to be the VRM that gives in.

Yeah, year+ later. If it was possible I'd get a full refund or tell them to give you an equivalent of the current gen, a 390, or your money back

oh well given this has been necroed already..
As far as im aware, most r9/r7 cards with the crimson drivers throttle because the fan settings dont work..

i use speed fan and set a fan profile for the GPU and just let that deal with it..
if i dont use speed fan well its 40% fan 100% of the time, and ridiculous temps + throttling.
now il just add i haven't read any of this thread really.
but i saw some comments about vrm failures. so thought id mention, if the thing was using stock fans with the crimson drivers then the vrms probably overheated..

honestly have no idea why it hasn't been fixed. even the latest drivers have the same issue.

Hey guys, I sold the card almost a year ago. I just wasn't happy it couldn't run my prefered games as well as the GTX 900 series.

What I don't like about Radeons, is that they all hard-crash when overclocking or they reached a temp limit, the only way to get out is to reset the computer. While nVidia driver just restarts itself and lets the system to go on as it did without crashing everything. Granted that won't let you get back to full 3d clocks of the card until you restart, but at least you can launch afterburner or something to collect your results and stuff or whatever.

Though I wish I held on to it, seeing as during the recent mining fad, used R9 380's with 4GB of VRAM went for it's full retail price or more,

380's aren't really that bad, I just wish I got the 480 instead after waiting a bit. Most Radeons shine on higher resolutions and when you tax VRAM to it's limits.

Blanket statement, mine does not throttle.

Fyi 380s are actually 285s
