Shipments of tablet PCs is bound to go down by 30% in Q1 2012, according to market research carried out by DigiTimes. The various vendors will ship 14.97 million tablet PCs in the first quarter of 2012, dropping 30.6% on quarter but rising 77.6% on year. This figure can be broken down to 11 million iPad 2 and iPad 3 units, and some 3.97 tablets comprising of various other models than iPads. Shipments of these non-iPad tablets will decrease by 50.8% on quarter and include 1.5 million Kindle Fires and 300,000 Nook Tablets, DigiTimes Research said.

Of all the tablets shipped in Q1 2012, 26.3% will run Android, and 13.3% will be running Texas Intruments' processors, the research said. Taiwan-based ODMs alone will comprise a huge 90.25% of all tablet shipments in Q1, of which Foxconn will account for 83%, followed by Quanta Computer with 9.6%, DigiTimes Research indicated.

You probably confused "retina display" for that, which is exactly the 2048x1536 pixel display.

My old ASUS laptop had a fingerprint scanner. It was cool, I just lovingly stroked it and it would unlock.

    Kinda like my girlfriend.

Personally not purchasing a tablet til Window 8 releases. Then I feel like I can actually do something useful on it.

If this is true, then I will be getting one.

It's a poor show by the PC industry that, yet again, it takes Apple to bring technology to market. And in this instance, it is high pixel density to the tablet format.

Finally, a tablet with print quality display. 2048 in the "y" makes an A4 page readable. Now we just need a decent PDF reader and I'm good to go.

For clarity... am I reading it correctly that non-Apple pads are looking bleak, but Apple ones are down on last quarter, but still up in general?

That's surprising, I had expected non-Apple ones to ramp up sales, rather than lose out. Perhaps Windows 8 will hammer IOS.

Hell, that's more resolution than my 24" monitor. This may be the first iPad I actually consider.
