GPU core(only) temperature has risen suddenly

So out of the blue my second card/second slotted GPU(MSI gaming 290) is running 10-15c hotter at just the core when under load. At idle it's as expected. Additionally, the average VRM temperatures are still the same. I haven't changed any thing and it was fine several days ago.

The first slot/main card is being used more % wise in programs, and runs cooler. Historically it was the other way around, although they were closely matched.

I went ahead and did a new application of the thermal paste(using the same brand/version), and it didn't make a difference.

I'm at a loss as to why this is happening.

Air cooled. I forgot to mention that I have been using two 120mm fans on it, instead of the standard fans. They didn't come loose or lose function. I restrapped them to the heatsink again to be sure, and also tried the stock fan assembly.

Watching Afterburner's /GPUz temperature readings, it's almost as if the second card is being the primary workhorse, despite what the activity % says, because the temperatures seem almost reversed in contrast to what they usually are.

It's got me stumped too. It's been my experience that it's the first card that is the primary workhorse and that runs a bit hotter.

Nothing else changed software or harware-wise?

No, nadda.

I'll do a full driver clean and physical installation of the cards, via Windows default driver. Maybe something has bugged out Afterburner's voltage control and the card is running higher than it's meant to - despite what GPUz reports.

Good news, after tightening up the 120mm fans + a new application of thermal again, the temperatures have returned to normal. I am going to put this down to a portion of the TIM wearing out/drying up and allowing a part of the chip to make bare metal contact with the heatsink.
That would explain the sudden increase in temps at only the core itself.
