gtx 660 fan stopped working. need help!

I got the gtx 660 for some time now. It's the MSI twin frozr III with two fans. One of the fans suddenly stopped working. I tried to take the gpu out and clean it a bit and also tried to update the BIOS (im not quite sure I did it right). I don't have warranty anymore so I can't send it to repair.

When i use MSI Afterburner and set the speed fan to approx 85% and over the non working fan begins to work. But the speed is too fast and it gets very loud.

Any suggestions what I can do? It's getting overheated with only the single fan working.

Throw a waterblock on it call it a day. If thats not an option, search ebay for someone selling one for parts and pull the fan off of it, or sometimes you can find just the air cooler. That one being an older gpu, might be a tough find.

A waterblock is probably going to cost as much as the 660 itself at Street value not to mention the need for an already setup custom waterloop otherwise its just pointless

its all well and good throwing idea's to solve the problem out into the ether but you have to bear in mind the cost of YOUR solution and its practicality.

You Just as well Might have said "" throw it away and Buy New""

The OP is looking for solutions to a problem Not advice on Spending
he may not have said so but what he is looking for a cost effective solution to his problem.

Edit
OP have you tried to clean and lubricate problem fan
Dust may be causing it to stick until the card heat sensor causes it to run at full load and the extra power Needed overcomes the dust friction

Thanks for the advice! I haven't tried that and it makes sense with how it is acting. I should try that out because anything else doesn't seem to work.

And you are right about I dont wan't to buy parts for the gpu (might aswell by a new one then) but I would just give it a shot before I do that.

I didnt see anything in his original post regarding not wanting to spend any money to fix the issue. Thanks for adding more into the original post, I don't know what we would do without you reading more into the problem than was originally posted. Im sure your a hit at work when someone gives you a task, you just start adding in your own instructions even though the original task never stated anything about it at all. Also, I suppose you only read the first sentence of my post. If you would have kept reading on instead of having a hair trigger finger on the reply button, you would have clearly seen I posed the following, "If that is not an option, maybe try to find a busted on on EBAY, or someone selling an aircooler with working fans and replace it."

For me, flashing the BIOS would be last resort, not first. I would definitely investigate the fan physically then move on to possible software solutions.
You can always connect a different pwm fan to a mobo header (or molex but with no control)
Fan headers on gpus can be tricky to access, remember theres nothing wrong with ghetto especially if it keeps kit running.

Nice to see you guys post different solutions to my problem. Yea maybe i should have stated that i wanted a repair-solution then it would have clarified my intentions.

For me, flashing the BIOS would be last resort, not first. I would definitely investigate the fan physically then move on to possible software solutions.

Haha nice one though with the ghetto solution I might give it a shot :D

Just throw on a decent 120mm... Would probably do fine alone, without the other fan.

Won't fit on this particular heat sink.

Take of that front plate and put on another 80mm fan with some metal ties.

No sorry not 20 quid for a pair of bloody fans...

You can still slappa 120mm fan on there, but it won't be as efficient. Otherwise get a cheap 80mm fan and stick it on. That way you can actually re-use what you buy.

thats gonna sound like a hair dryer and cool as well as one
he needs a 12 pin,75Mm cage-less, fan with a minimum, blade count of 8 and a depth of 1.0 to 1.8mm
and the more blade pitch the better ...
this would be optimal

if the mounting screws don't completely line up then super-glue will be fine

thats funny...it was exactly the same one you linked to but a UK price.

AND if the mounting screws don't completely line up then super-glue will be fine .......................... so who is ghetto modding now then, I see you deleted that particular post, remember the one where you said ghetto mods had no place on TPU and you were reminded that there has been a ghetto mods thread on TPU since before you were a member.

now hushup.
