Hello Guys,

does it make sense to buy a GTX 970 if i only have an Phenom with 4.25 GHZ stable ? or will it be a bottleneck and will slow everything down ? Otherwise i have to spend much money because the Socket has no more powerfull CPU. What r ur thoughts ? or do u have any benchmarks , reviews ?

thnx

What games do you play? Under most generic game circumstances, you might not see any serious bottlenecks. 4.25Ghz on a x6 is pretty good, best I could get from mine was 4.2Ghz.
If you prefer games that are more CPU orientated, you may find your CPU holding the GPU back.

Probably not enough to worry, at this point a GTX 970 will probably be enough to max out games at 1080p even with that processor especially with the high overclocks on it. My Phenom II X6 1100t got up to 4.2ghz with 4.3turbo being the best and it games very well in recent games with just an HD 7950 maxing most out.

In short you should be fine with that for at least awhile longer as it would not bottleneck a GTX 970 at least much and only really in games that require a lot of CPU power.

Since Germany is known for their efficiency - i think the 970 would be the best idea. Cant have Merkel kicking down your door with Grenzschutzgruppe 9 dropping in to snatch you up cuz youre running a a GPU thats sucking up so much power.

Well it might be worth your consideration of getting an R9 290 (Non X) because of price to pair with your system mostly because its cheaper and will give you a similar experience at a resolution of 1080p 60hz (If that is your monitor) or lower. Both cards will be able to max out games at those resolutions so I would say get whichever is cheapest mostly because you will not get a real difference in performance between them since both cards will run games Ultra settings above 60FPS average (1080p and below).

CPU-wise it should be fine, especially since DX12 should be released this year (I think?) which will most likely lessen the load on your CPU in upcoming games.

Two things you might or might not want to think about however:

Nvidia drivers are generally slightly more efficient when it comes to CPU use, meaning a nvidia card would generally do slightly better on your CPU than an AMD card.
However, AMD cards will let you use mantle which, when the game supports it, will cause your CPU to be even less of a bottleneck.

Both the 970, or an AMD equivalent are excellent choices regardless, and will probably do great with your CPU!

Temps are not really going to be a concern here on the GPU because its once single card and any after market cooler alleviates any concerns over temps. At this point buying too much of a card would almost be wasted not strictly because of the CPU but because after a certain point unless your monitor supports beyond 60hz your not going to see anything (or its a higher resolution and needs the extra GPU power).

Generally speaking you could even go lower at the range of a GTX 770 or R9 280X and still get Max in games at 1080p 60FPS with very little exception. An R9 290 is generally very inexpensive right now and can be had for a great value similar to the R9 290X. The GTX 970 is one heck of a value right now and a great card in general but its better at being a 1440p card and very overkill for 1080p (Same can be said for a 290/X but they are cheaper). If your looking to upgrade its not a bad choice for the GTX 970 but like I said your going to pay more than an R9 290 and honestly probably see no difference in terms of what your outputting IMHO.

Just wanted to put it out there.

I recently picked up a MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr card for cheap as it was returned.

I run a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming on a 60Hz 1080p monitor and I could almost tell no difference in FPS on High detail in BF4 between the 970 and 760...

I really got the 970 since it was the best bang for the buck, but unless your needing more than 60 fps and playing on higher resolutions it really wont be a substantial difference.

Realistically though, it may be worth it to consider a 960 or 760 (If you choose a 770 you might as well get the 970) as GhostRyder suggested, but in terms of best bang for the buck, the 970 is it.

My G1 Gaming GTX 970 rarely goes above 60c with a custom fan profile set up.

Best of luck choosing

-JB

which will most likely lessen the load on your CPU in upcoming games.
I would not think of it that way. Developers will probably use that "saved load" to other areas of the game, such as more complex or higher number of artificial intelligence and computer controlled players.

It is being always like that. Or do you think the big titles will let your processor load low!? Keep on dreaming.

thank u guys lot of input...i think i will go with the 970..now next prob. i still have a HP 2510i monitor...is it worth to buy a korean 27" 2560x1440p ? or maybe bigger ? i have never seen games on 27" 1440p monitor....but the koreans are pretty cheap

btw. the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SuperClocked ACX 2.0,Asus STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5 cost the same as the gigabyte which one migh be better ?

The Asus Strix is the best all-rounder in terms of performance and features (both useful and cosmetic).

I'm running on 1440p, and probably wouldn't go back down to 1080p. You just have to bare in mind that games that already run poorly will run slightly worse. It also means watching HD videos is a little less HD, as fullscreen 1080p looks almost bad on a 1440p monitor! I got myself a Korean panel, and it's been happily running for many years. We also bought 35 of them for work, and only one failed due to a bad power supply.

thnx for the answer. HD watching is not necessary. i have an 60" LG Flat for watching....and with the gtx970 the games will not run slowly i think. or does a bigger screen mor CPU stress for the phenom 1100 T ?

The higher the resolution, the less CPU comes into play when games are more GPU orientated. You'll find the processor may run less in a higher resolution in typical FPS games. In CPU orientated games however, like Crysis 3, RTS style games (Starcraft II etc), the processor will still choke.

ok. then should 2560/1440 run fine with my phenom and the gtx...
does anyone know this monitor ?
