GTX280 Dead?

I have been having some trouble with my Gtx 280, I recently changed motherboard and had one GTX280 running in the system for about a week or two all working great. Today i put in my second card and to my suprise the first card stopped working, Fan spins up to 100% and green light comes on, but no video is outputted and it is not detected in windows, meanwhile the other card works fine... I have tried running one at a time and swapping power connectors but i cannot get the card to start!!

Can it be flashed or something?

Try it in another machine if you can.

Hi,

Do you have issues with that GTX 280 before (BSOD, freezes, crashes, artifacts etc.)? And which one is presumed dead: the XFX or the POV one? And what temperature does the card have when idled and at full load (when it still works)?

I heard that the GTX 280 cards can get really hot, especially the VRMs, so it may be one of your card is on its last leg after all these years, so perhaps you can not do much about it. Perhaps test it with another PC (as brandonwh64 has suggested), or the oven trick may help, but I never did it (although heard that it will make you oven smell really bad). Perhaps someone here in the forum can tell you more about it. But if you still have warranty, do make use of it first.

No warranty as I bought the card off Nat217 a couple months ago (it is the POV one), The temps were fine, like 45-50 idle and 72-76 load, never seen it go past 80 in anything other than a benchmark, i will change my PSU again but if the other card works i dont see why this one wont

is it possible to blind flash it with an ATI card in the primary? maybe the BIOS is corrupt?

If it may help how would i go about doing this?

so how can i do this when the card is not even detected in windows? i can't get hold of a PCI card, this 3850 will have to do

Anyone got some guide or something??

Plus i only have a USB available right now as the Floppy drive and DVD writer are both broken!

if the card just suddenly died I'd doubt it's a bios issue. Old card + no warranty = oven bake candidate imo.

dont have an oven! only a microwave lol...

I will try and flash it or im just gonna shove both cards on fleabay and pick up a gtx570

how do i make a bootable USB and set it so it wont mess up my 3850 when i flash it?

Don't bother wasting your time trying to flash it - the card has suffered hardware failure and it won't work. The card may possibly be repairable by soldering dry joints if you're lucky.

Flashing will at best do nothing and at worst guarantee it will never boot again. Don't do it.

I agree with the dont flash it idea wot will that do ?

I had an idea it might be the actual pci-e slot but if you tried the other card in it then it must be working so strip the card down & get it in the oven, i wud put odds on it being dried out seems to be common on older Nv cards.

It can be partially working, that's all. So, still don't flash it, as I explained above and it may or may not be saveable with soldering. It's safer to err towards the not.
