Hard disk spaced reduced after partitioning !!

hello all ,
i recently bought a 1T 64MB WD Green Cavier hard disk drive .
the problem is when i went for partitioning only 950G out of 1024G was useable! (no problem cuz i myself found out that 10% percent of all hdds space are not useable . )
but the catch is ,when i partitioned the drive with 250,200,200, 310 as partitions size
they again got reduced to 245,196,196,293 !(when i logged on to me windows) so why ? i mean the hard disk is reduced from 1 terabyte to 950 gig , so then what is the other 20Gigabyte for ?
with the current situation i can only use 930 gigabyte of my 1024 gigabyte hard drive ! and this means 94 gigabyte of space lost!! and thats crazy!
how can i fix this problem ?

For NTFS, overhead is about 4%

Also be sure you are looking at consistent measures. I had this problem recently. I was using one utility to find old archive files. It reports size in actual bytes, not kb, mb, gb, etc. - all 10+ digits. But Explorer was showing kb IIRC. Obviously the numbers didn't match. But since I thought this was a multi-tape qic archive, I didn't catch on right away.

Here is a quick reference to show the amount that the actual values differ compared to the advertised for each common referenced value:

Megabyte Difference = 48,576 Bytes
Gigabyte Difference = 73,741,824 Bytes
Terabyte Difference = 99,511,627,776 Bytes

1 TB (terabyte) = 931.32 GiB (gibibyte)

1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (10^12)
1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (2^40)

1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes (10^9)
1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30)

"930" is awfully close to 931.32 GiB. In short, your (Microsoft's) math is bad. You aren't missing anything except proper units (the "i" is very important).

WesternDigital sold you a 1 TB drive. Windows is telling you it is a 931.32 GiB drive. It's like calling 1 mile, 1.609344 kilometers. Different ways of saying the same thing.


NTFS (or any other file system) doesn't show up on the capacity figure, it shows up as a reduction of space available. If memory serves, a freshly formatted NTFS drive with nothing on it takes about 8 MiB of space.

Windows doesn't round, it drops off. Doesn't make any sense but what did Microsoft do that does?

Yeah I looked into this years ago.
As I understand there is some overhead as mentioned in a previous post in this thread.

That's all I knew and made sense to me.

Didn't bother to look into it further.

I have way more than enough space right now as it is.

That's a misconception. Capacity is only changed through sectors going bad. Formatted and raw capacity is the same (unless bad sectors were discovered during formatting). Formatting, however, increases the used space (how much dependent on the file system used).
