I have had a 7970 and two 280X's so only a small sample really but no problems on any of them and I only use HDMi, good luck with the refund.

Is it better to buy brand new R9 280X for about 285$ or wait for R9 3xx?

The 280X will be in-between the 370X and 380X performance wise. And, staying with current trends, their prices will likely reflect that(when the R9 3xx series are released). Meaning, there's probably not going to be any real competition as far as an R9 3xx in the same performance/price range. So the 280X wins by default.

Maybe I'm missing something...

If you play up to 1080p, 960 is a good card up to that resolution, and should be around 80$ less (depending where you are tho). If you're going anything higher than 1080p then forget about 960

Newegg are doing the Sapphire VaporX for 240 currently, assuming you are in the US of course.

Yeah, I'd def go with the best card "on sale" for the price range. There have been very good promotions lately, even the 960 coming with The Witcher III (from certain sellers) would be a good deal, or a good dropped price 280x ofc. With 280x @ 240$ I'd def pick it up above a 200$ 960.

I needed to down-clock my cards Default GPU speed to ensure it runs problem free. It's a SAPPHIRE (ATI) DUAL-X R9 280X 3GB GDDR5 OC (UEFI). I have no problem doing this, because the card is plenty fast for my needs anyway.

i cant say it's the best option cause
R9 290 - yeah... powerful card. To expensive - even 270-280$ for used one
but there's no risk(it's much lesser)
so good luck and hope you'll be glad with new videocard:)

So, this 7970 TOP had problems with VRM, right?

What do you think about Gigabyte R9 280 (not X)? GV-R928WF3OC-3GD

all 7970/280x suffer from overheating memory, some of them work fine and some get artefacts - thats all(just depending on quality of memory chips - some of them are heating more even with lower clocks, some of them are heating without any damage to performans/output picture)

280 - good card, but if you got options - better take 280x/gtx 960

just taking 7970/280x from hands - it's a bit risky(also if card is delivered to you by mail, better ask seller for video with working card on full load/some tests - after that you can feel yourself more safety:))
also you can ask seller for his rig, for his thoughts about card/some benches, what were temps with this card and how it performanced in some games/driver versions/OSes/different rigs
simple 5 minutes of chatting can save your money and time:)

i dont know, cause if you buy a new one - better go for 960 cause of maxwell architecture and excelent OC potential(you havent got so great potential without modding cooling stuff on 280/280x)
if you go for used card(i dont know if you lost or not this idea) better contact seller and ask for all little bugs/features and smthg like this, cause if seller answers to all questions - he was satisfied by card not only for price/money, but loved it and know all issues with that card and how to fix them)

gtx 960:no matter whats the version of the card - if it's not reference - they all perform well and got good OC potential

For 99%, I will buy brand new card.
You say GTX 960... but it has 2 GB memory and 128 bit bus. It could be a botlleneck in some games.

Maybe it's better to wait for R9 3xx... but on otherside, they won't be much cheaper ot something.

as a proud owner of 280x i can say that in new games on max settings i dont got stable 60fps, i should cut off some features, so 280x is not ultimate card - it's good, but hot + AMD drivers(had some bad optimized games) + power hungry + not cheap
so on the other side gtx 960 got good OC potential(it's cooler) + nice drivers(never had any issues even with my cheap 550TI) + energy efficient + same price
i could take gtx 960/970 before 11.2014 but after that i dont got choice: even brand new asus 290x(R9290X-DC2OC-4GD5)got same price as gtx960(used 290 with guarantee is 35%less, used 960 got same price as in shops), you could buy two 280x(with guarantee) for same price as gtx960
check this"

just one thing that i cant get with nvidia(any nvidia card) - colors, they are solid(with nvidia i always corrected gamma in windows settings, but with AMD even by default they are pretty, much more natural, brighter, black is realy black, grey is not vanished....i can enumerate for a long time:))

It's a close race, but I'd still go with the 280X. I'm never going back to Nvidia.:)
In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon R9 280X are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 2GB.

The GTX 960 has a 277 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon R9 280X, but the Radeon R9 280X has 64 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 960. As a result, the Radeon R9 280X exhibits a 36.7 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 960. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 960 has a 277 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon R9 280X and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 960 providing 8.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GTX 960 was released over a year more recently than the Radeon R9 280X, and so the GTX 960 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The Radeon R9 280X has 1024 MB more video memory than the GTX 960, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Radeon R9 280X also has superior memory performance overall.

The Radeon R9 280X has 175.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 960, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon R9 280X is massively better than the GTX 960.

The GeForce GTX 960 2GB has 1024 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon R9 280X has 2048. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 960 is 1628 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon R9 280X is 1741. The Radeon R9 280X having 113 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon R9 280X delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 960.

The GeForce GTX 960 2GB requires 120 Watts to run and the Radeon R9 280X requires 250 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GTX 960 and a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the Radeon R9 280X. The Radeon R9 280X requires 130 Watts more than the GTX 960 to run. The difference is significant enough that the Radeon R9 280X may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 960.

I won't OC card... I don't have time for figuring out - "hmm, was it artifact, or not?" . I want a card, which I put in PCI slot and it works as I want. I read so many reviews of GTX 960, and I won't go for this card. It's performance is "not stable" - in some games it performs very very well, even better than R9 280X, but in some others, like for example Far Cry 4, there are some stutters, FPS drops etc - propably during these 2 GB on 128-bit bus.

The choice is between R9 280 and 280X.

Far cry 4 is game from ubi - its all said
In far cry 4 I got stutters every 5 secs on any high-speed land vehicle)
Between 280 and 280x I'd prefer( as I did when I should make decision) factory OCed 280x

I just want to chime in with my XFX 280x DD experience. Bought it new and since day 1 had artifacts.

Turns out I'd only get artifacts whenever hardware acceleration was being used in the web browser. I just disabled GPU acceleration in chrome and was pretty much ok. Steam (since it uses Internet Explorer) would occasionally cause artifacts as well.

Never did get to the bottom of it but I created a thread here seeking help. No solution worked accept disabling hardware acceleration.

Got this, also got very fast switching between 2D mode and 3D mode(2D-3D-2D3D...), that caused artifacts(solved problem with video card bios update)

I'm thinking about some solution: buy R9 280 Gigabyte for now, and use it for couple of months. When R9 3xx arrive, sell R9 280 and buy something newer at end of this year. What do you think?

Up to 1080p you won't get bottleneck from the mem/bus except you want to play SoM on Ultra (which will probably suffer the same on a 280x) and Skyrim with tons of mods, and again the same.

280 > 960 > 280x .

Both FC4 and AC:Unity are not games that I would look for gaming performance. You need a 290x/970 to reach avg 60fps on AC:U (ON LOW DETAIL @ 1080p) . FC4 delivers stable 55+ FPS on High@1080p , yet there are a lot of issues with the game itself that are far from the actual bandwith.

If you can/want to wait for R9 3xx series, then yeah, buy the cheapest one, and wait until June with a not so good card. If you want decent performance/money ratio right now, go for the 960.
