Yeah thermal paste is no problem I got some AS5 now.
The good 3870's, at least for now, are about $100 over my price range
We'll see what's up in June.

How do you guys think the 3850 will do in Crysis, 1280x960 medium settings, and a MAX of 4xAA/4xAF?

I play all high on 1440x900 with 2x AA and I get like 22-30 fps on average.

Same res here but in comparison, I play on low at about 30-35 fps on rig 1. Rig 2, forget about it, it will barely play at all, 800x600 low 25-30 fps.

So you're telling me to go with the 580MHz 8800GS and overclock it? But it's only 384mb... I'd like having 512MB frame buffer. Modern games on average use 300+... but that's on average. I don't want to start lagging when a bunch of shit starts flying around all over the place, or when something blows up near me (in BF2142 even getting out of the pod is rough)

I still say go with a 3850, I know from experience there great overclockers and can play games just fine.

The memory is great but it does not make up for GPU power, the fact is that in most things, even with the lesser memory the 8800GS scrapes it but to be honest, there is not a great deal of difference, if you would prefer the 512MB ram then you wont go far wrong with the 3850 either, either are good.

With ATI's recent price restructuring it just doesn't make sense to go with a 3850 at all. Get a 3870 instead. It can be found at lower prices than those commanded by the 512MB 3850 just a few weeks ago.

That or a 9600GT, though you'll pay a bit more for Nvidia's offering.

To be fair 9600gt does not really blow the 3870 out of the water, but it does seem to perform better, and your probably not going to find any a 3870 or 3850 for much cheaper.

I think you misunderstood me. The "both" in my post meant both 3850 and 8800GS 384mb,since this thread is about 3850 vs 8800GS 384mb afterall.;)
Now 8800GS 768MB is a whole different matter.
It's pretty much tied with 9600GT and 3870.

Ah yes, that makes sense, I just wasn't thinking. I didn't know the 768gs was out, I keep hearing about it but I don't see it anywhere. That might be a good choice if the price is right.

They haven't arrive in the US or Europe yet I don't think. The owner of the site probably used his "connections" and got one early.

Wow I didn't know a 9600gt could be found so cheaply! But that price is very subject to change by June :banghead:

If you're paying 169.99 + shipping for either of those cards, might as well get this:
http://clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A9630892
pwns both of them out of the water. Anyone disagree?

Well I would not say it "pwns" in fact, the 8800GS beats the 9600GT in a fair few benches although I would agree that prolly the GT is the faster card across the board but not significantly enuff in my opinion to say "pwns".
