They should be close to equal speed, but the 4850 is cheaper. So I think that would be the winner.

At stock they are about equal.

They HD4850 is cheaper, but the 9800GTX overclocks a lot better.

If you overclock, I would go with the 9800GTX, if overclocking isn't your priority, then go with the HD4850. Either way, they are both great cards.

Thats not really the case, they have OC potential, but they are only limited by the silent fan they have.

And the poorly binned cores, low stock voltages, and poor overclocking tools available.

9800GTX uses Samsung 0.8ns and Hynix 0.8ns Memory which overclocks alot better with voltage than Qimonda.

I'd recommend the 9800GTX cos, they are around the same price and the same performance with the 9800 being a bit more expensive, but for that more you get better cooling, better overclocking ability without doing voltmods and so on.

But the 9800gtx does have a large 2 slot cooler and requires much more power (and 2 power connectors!).

They don't use poorly binned cores, the reason the 4870 is running 750MHz and the 4850 can't is because the 4870 is using 1.26v vs 1.15v. Put that voltage into a 4850 and it will hit 750MHz no problem. Both cards will do 900MHz+ on the core aswell, just need to pencil mod, which isn't difficult.

i am waiting for the super rv770 as palit guy pointed out, something even better than 3 phase power system and overclocking also a lot better .

get the 4850 as a thank to atiamd ;P
as they kicked nvidia in teh nuts for their $300 when they released the 4850 for $200 with better perf, using less power (one 6pin power) and is singelslot!

9800GTX drivers has been milked to much so 4850 is the best choice, there will be many performance drivers ahead of us

    4850 vs 9800GTX
4850 wins on HD(Blu-Ray) decoding (better than GTX 280!) also supports Dual 1080p HD playback on H.264/VC-1 and MPEG-2, Audio Support (heck you send Lossless LPCM 7.1 channel audio via HDMI, this cant be done on any 9800GTX or any other N card)
4850 wins on performance & performance vs power usage
4850 wins on drivers (as in you get new drivers EVERY singel months, this month will be catalyst 8.7 on 15 july)
4850 wins on cooling (as in singel slot!)
4850 wins on power (as in one singel PCIe 6pin)

i highly recommend ati, why chose nvidia when ati has alot better card for the monkeys in your wallet atm?

There are numerous 1GB and OC'ed HD4850 variants coming out. I say HD4850. 9800 GTX comes with the same drab reference design on all manufacturers.

Just because I know and am willing to point out the negative sides about the HD4850 I am anti-ATi?

Without Voltmodding and BIOS flashing you will be lucky to get 700MHz on the core, most report getting around 685. Increasing the voltage via BIOS modding will get your up to 700MHz, pushing the voltages higher via physical voltage modding will get you up to the 750 and higher range. However, with any voltage increase, a new cooler is in order, which brings the price up to a 9800GTX.

Out of the box, the 9800GTX overclocks a lot better than the HD4850. Everything is already setup for good overclocking on the 9800GTX.

Edit: Also, I would recommend the 8800GTS 512MB over the 9800GTX for several reasons mentions in this thread. The 8800GTS is shorter, has essentially the same cooling, overclocks to very similar clocks as the 9800GTX, and only requires one power connector. Plus newegg has them for $155.

I had a look at your PSU, the 4850 would easier on it than a 9800GTX.

    I say 4850:)

    get this card

it will overclock and match or surpass a 9800 gtx/ 4850 no problem because really it is a 9800gtx and it comes with witcher ( a very good game for 154.00 after a rebate) Also there are already physx driver avaiable for it. The only difference is the 9800gtx has slighty better ram, and it makes zero difference in games and only about 300 points in benching. Use the difference if you want to then buy a after market cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127325

Or, for only 3 dollar's more he can get the Palit 4850, and overclock it past an overclocked 8800GTS/9800GTX....Believe it or not people, 4850's can overclock quite well:rolleyes:
