Hey,
To this day, I had a video card HD5870 and today I received an HD5970. (both operating normally)
I wanted to put them in CF, I put them both on my motherboard (X58A-UD7) and installed the newest drivers (after I deleted the old ones with Driver sweeper).
When I run tests like 3DMark 11 and Unigine my screen starts to flicker. The benchmarks don't crash and the results shows all 3 cards are working properly and give a high score. (made sure it's a tri crossfire result)
The problem is that the screen goes crazy flecks throughout the test.
Does anyone have an idea what I can do to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance, Amit.

Hi

That looks like v-sync & possible crossfire profile issue [report issue to the AMD Driver Team]

Maybe, try an older drivers. [Ensure 5970 is primary card PCIe slot 1]

Note: if not using Radeon Pro - download it and learn how to use it; will help with Tri-fire, v-sync and has frame limiter

I have put the card aside for now. I guess I should install the backed up bios from boot now...

Hi

Welcome to TPU

tried to install a new bios on the 5870.
I don't remember advising a Vbios flash; that was silly and unnecessary, that out of the way

Flashing the vga Vbios will not get rid of the flickering; it is v-sync and a combination of crossfire profiles
most likely a crossfire profile is down-clocking one of the GPU's or not syncing with the monitor

Note:
If going to make changes to the Vbios image; make two copies edit one copy of the original and *keep a copy in a safe place

I guess I should install the backed up bios from boot now...
yep; that would be a good idea; let me know if need assistance

May be a good idea to fill in full system specs here include Make, Model and OS

note: make backups of all the Vbios images; don't forget the 5970 has Master and Slave image [don't get them mixed up]

I flashed the bios before your comment. Indeed you didn't recommend doing such a thing and also I feel stupid since the 5870 doesn't work now..
I don't think I need to touch any of the 5970 bioses since the problem is only with the 5870.
I will search for a guide on how to flash the backed up bios again but if you have a quick url then ill be happy to check it out.
BTW, what's atb? (not an english native speaker)

**If you are able to access windows with a spare vga card or on-board vga; Uninstall any AMD drivers for the vga card before the flash process**

Create a bootable flash drive
go here http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/browse.php?c=21

Download - HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 & Windows 98 System Files

click Primary Download unzip the files to a folder on your HDD; make sure your USB Memory stick is attached to your PC; open HP USB Disk

Storage Format Tool v2.1.8 ; select Create a DOS start-up disk/ select: using DOS system files located at: (these are the files you have just downloaded): browse to the files in win98boot; then start the process.

Download latest version of ATIFlash
here - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...sh%203.99.html

copy atiflash and [VbiosName].rom to the usb flash drives root directory

Set the motherboard bios to boot from usb *press F8 during boot; select from boot menu if option is available; this should boot to a win98 dos prompt

Type at the dos prompt - dir to view the content of the flash drive

Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -i 0 [see if adapter is at this address and is recognised]

Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -unlockrom 0 to unlock the gpu in adapter 0 [Note: 0 is the primary card PCIe slot one & 1 is the secondary PCIe slot two][*may be required]

Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -f -p 0 [VBiosName].rom [Note: 0 is the primary card PCIe slot one & 1 is the secondary PCIe slot two] [Note: when booting from on-board vga / igp also = primary position 0]

reboot once finished and remove the flash drive

reinstall AMD Catalyst Drivers

Hi, first of all thanks for the quick guide, you are awesome.
Second of all, I can boot and use the computer normally with the 5970 only. (I mean, when I only use the 5970 everything works fine but if I boot with both the 5970 and the 5870 I post fine and windows boots and when the drivers load the screen goes black and nothing is working).
I didn't get why I need to uninstall the current driver in order to make the bootable flash drive ?
Also, I made a bootable flash drive with this software https://rufus.akeo.ie/ which I used before to install ubuntu on my dad's laptop.
Actually it didn't work and I couldn't boot from the DOK. I don't know why but I'm sure I will be able to do that tomorrow.
Now I have to go and since I'm on GMT+2 I'll just continue tomorrow.
Thanks man you are really helpful! cheers.

EDIT: so I booted from the DOK now. the problem was that the motherboard thinks the DOK is an HDD so when you select your boot device, instead of choosing some usb device you choose an HDD.
GOTTA GO, will upadte later!

Ok so I flashed the bios successfully and I can now boot regularly with both of the cards.
Now I another problem (which I had before). It's like the driver won't let me the option to enable the triple way crossfire.
When I do enable crossfire I only get the 2 5970 cores "in crossfire" and not the third 5870 core.
It also looks like the driver disables the 5870 card.
It looks like this:

(when the tri way crossfire worked this screen had 2 check boxes and one sub check box)
and this is the screen where it looks like the 5870 is disabled (when it worked he wasn't)

I actually didn't fix it. I just swapped in and out the cards and deleted and installed drivers, a few times and then it worked.
Maybe you have a better solution?

EDIT: I'm also adding a screenshot of GPU-Z - notice it says only 2 gpu's are enabled on crossfire - on oppose to 3 gpu's in the first screenshot

Refer to first post here "Maybe, try an older drivers."

Use a third party Driver Cleaner; DDU or Other to deep clean drivers
Power down the system
remove the HD 5870
power on install older driver that has HD5970 support
Power down the system
Install and reseat the HD 5870; attach the crossfire bridge

check in CCC again

I tried everything you suggested. I installed old drivers (didn't help) so I updated to latest (didn't help).
Of course I always used DDU for clean uninstall.
Then I unplugged the 5870 and booted with the 5970 only and then shut down the computer and plugged the 5870 back in and booted again and then IT WORKED.
And now somewhy there are no flickers it all works fine and it's quite a beast now. VSYNC is actually off...
I thank you sincerely my friend!
here are some 3dmark results:
