HDD access issue

My girlfriend brought some old IDE and SATA drives over because she wanted me to take all her Uni work off them and put them onto a usb drive.

Now, i have a little converter that changes IDE/SATA to usb so i can hot swap without opening my case. Now every time i connect her HDDs they show up in disk manager, but i am unable to access them whatever i do. Now i know there has to be a way, so the quicker i get the answer the happier she will be and i get "rewards" ahem...

Oh and im using Win7 at the moment, Answers are welcome

i dont no about 7 but in vista i had the same problem i had to right click my computer select manage, go onto disk management on the left an sort it out from in there

Yea, but i cant seem to find a solution in there...

On another note one of the HDD just, well...smoke and a burning smell is bad i take it lol

hmmmmm i wouldnt say it a sign of a healthy drive. Personally i realy dont like sata to usb adapters an as its urs missues work just hook then up direct to ya pc. Plus then you'l get extra 'rewards' for the extra time an effort :toast:
