Hi guys! I've recently just joined techpowerup and I need help. I've got the MSI R9 280x 3gb Gamer and its load is 95c and I've researched and done a few bios updates but no changes, I'm fairly sure I'm doing something wrong because the new temps for the latest bios for this card should be around 75ish degrees instead of 95 Celsius and I don't think its a good idea running it this hot all the time, since its already doing that by itself in games, its currently idling at 55-60c which is terrible.

I'll attach a gpu-z of my card and I know I'm running in a 4x slot and I know it hurts performance but I'm having issues running it on the top slot on my UD5 and because I'm using the s340 mid tower its kinda suffocated on the near bottom x16 slot. Any help would be appreciated as I've tried flashing my card with the latest bios but temps aren't changing?!

if it is not getting enough airflow it would explain those temps.

take the side of your case off and if it is still like that rma it.

if the temps are normal with the side off you need to get it in the top x16 slot with better air flow.

Hi

+1 marsey99

[looking at the S340 Cassie there should be no issue fitting this vga card]
I'm having issues running it on the top slot on my UD5
Perhaps the post should be about the issues with the top slot of the UD5; care to expand, what issues? members of the TPU community may be able to assist

Test the vga card in another system [*If same issue] *return the vga card to the retailer, e-tailer or raise an RMA

Use MSI Afterburner software's to create a custom fan curve or set the fan to 100% and test temps

Note: flashing the vga cards Vbios is not going to solve this issue and should always be a last resort under the advice from the manufacturer

I've never had an issue with my first x16 lane before until I upgraded from my HD 6870 to my R9 280x that the issue arose, some UD5 owners say they had the same issue but after awhile of trying to work the top slot it'll eventually work which sounds really dodgy. My HD 6870 had no problem running in the top slot, I've tried multiple times in the top lane but it won't budge so I've been using either the middle x4 lane or closer to the bottom x16 lane on the UD5 board.

I've created a custom fan curve on the msi afterburner software but the card still hits the thermal limit making it throttle down to 60%, I've got good positive airflow through my case and I've tried without the side panel on and the temps are still quite the same.

that is as clear as mud, for me at least; what was the issue [blank screen; PCIe stuck at x1.0 or Other]

what did you do to resolve the issue with PCIe Slot One? [mother board bios update, reseat CPU, clear bios, reseat vga card or Other]

it boots fine apart from showing no display, so just a blank screen. Could this be my temp issue? I haven't found any solution to fixing it rather than just avoid using it. I've got the latest bios update which is F12.

at first read through this is a PCIe x16 slot seating problem

[double check that the vga card is not obstructed by the PC case; components or cables; from being fully seated]

*Example

PCIe Blade.jpg

*When looking across the PCIe Blade will see a small indent, if this PCB trace dose not make full contact with motherboard PCIe Slot vga cards self check will disable and course blank screen

If not already done so contact Gigabyte Tech Support raise a ticket, get their input

temp issue due to the position of the vga card rather than the card itself; would need to test in another stable system to be sure at this stage
"Test the vga card in another system [*If same issue] *return the vga card to the retailer, e-tailer or raise an RMA"

I've got it running in the x4 16x slot, I couldn't get it to run in the top slot even with it pushed right in and screwed in tight.

I'm running a custom fan curve on msi afterburner, in furmark it reaches 78c after a decent run apposed to hitting 100c within 10 seconds or so.
I can't return the card because I've voided the warranty by reapplying thermal compound to the gpu, the vrms have there own heatsinks which I didn't touch, I'll be upgrading soon to maybe a Nvidia card since they run a lot cooler.

Running it in the x4 slot is crippling the card's performance and power draw from the PCI-E lane, that's why your temperatures are lower. You haven't really "fixed" anything, merely stopped the card from providing the performance it usually would, in turn reducing the heat output.

O.K, why is vga card mounted in PCIEX4

Use PCIEX16_2 [or dose the vga card not work in that slot either]

I've got it running in the PCIEX16_2 but temps are still high, I'll just wait until I can move onto something else later on. Most games run it around 70-80c so its still radiating a ton of heat, but its playable.
Only has to last a few more months until I'm upgrading.

It sounds to me like it could be a couple of things (The Overheating):
1: The cards Heatsink is not properly on the card or has a separation of some sort. If your willing or have some willing you may want to try taking the cooler off, re-pasting it, and then putting back together to try. Otherwise you may want to RMA it because hitting that high idle sounds like something is seriously wrong.
2: The radiator is pulling hot air and pushing it towards the card which is causing it to run hot (Though the air would have to be pretty hot to cause that).

Not sure but to the first one sounds more plausible at this point because an idle that high sounds like improper contact causing abnormal temps.

You said you removed the cooler. Was it doing this before the removal?

Since your card is hitting such high temps, it sounds like a hestsink/cooler issue not making proper contact with the GPU. I'd take the card out, remote the cooler, clean off the GPU as best you can, check thermal pads on vram chops and reuse if they're still good, then reapply thermal compound and not too much! Reinstall cooler, don't over tighten screws. Give it another test in the main slot.

Hope it works out for you :toast:

Yeah the reason why I took the cooler off and cleaned the old thermal paste off was because I noticed the high temps, the card and the cooler gets too hot to even touch. I think its just a dead card.

These are idle temps and as you can see the fan is at 50% and still running around 60c. I researched around for ages and my batch that my card came from has a vrm problem with the bios, so I reflashed the latest bios but it didn't change anything. The card is a year old but I don't remember it running this hot from the beginning and I haven't bothered overclocking it or anything in the past.

It hit 95c in Counter-strike: Global Offense because my custom fan curve wasn't running and my AiO was in silent mode so no airflow through the front.

I think the reason is in poor condition factory thermal paste

I bought the same card (rev 1.2) on sale and saw that one cooler was bad rotated. Dust and dirt were outside and inside. I disassembled the videocard and found that the thermal paste has dried up long ago and has become to crumble. I replaced the thermal paste (arctic cooling mx-2), cleaned the fee from dust and smeared cooler.

Now the card heats up to 87 degrees in Furmark and up to 74 degrees in Dying Light (in the closed case). I'm afraid to imagine what it would be without replacing the thermal paste :shadedshu:
