so as a random early christmas present i was given a huge pile of PC hardware, much of it new. yeah, a TRUE nerd christmas!

the main swag:

1. P67A-C45 (B3) - help me choose a CPU. no unlocked multi support but it seems to support locking at turbo clocks, so an Intel Core i5 3570 (~$250) is my current choice unless someone can convince me the K chip is better on this mobo (i'll likely never upgrade the mobo)
(edit: looks like it has multi control, i'll cough up $20 more for the K chip)

2. GA-A55M-S2H socket FM1 matx board. looking at an A6-3670 for $55 as a quad core + IGP solution. Looks like its crossfire compatible some of teh GPU's here - a 5450, 6450 and a 6570)

3. M4A-88TD-M socket AM3 USB 3.0 matx board - currently has a 3.1GHz dual core CPU in it. will cofirm model number later.

4. GA-880G-UD3H AM3, no USB 2.0, crossfire. 2.9GHz athlon II x3 (tri core)

also got a gigabyte AM2+ board coming with AMD Athlon II x2 4850E -2.5GHz 45W dual core to go with it.

there was also four working laptops, and at least 5 PCI-E GPU's of varying age and quality :/

so envy aside, help me choose a CPU for #1 and #2 - #1 will replace my current desktop, #2 will end up as a spare gaming PC that i'd like to at least be able to run starcraft II decently.

3. will go to my fiancee (w/ 5850 1GB)

(my current CPU + mobo will get paird with a 5870 as yet another spare)

4. is the spare spare spare i guess XD

now i get you're all image whores so pics are comin:
x1950xtx 512MB not pictured, too dust.
9600GT 1GB not pictured, forgot it
no idea what red card is | Geforce 6200 turbocache 256MB
6450 ??MB | Geforce 620 1GB
Radeon 5450 1GB | Geforce 210 512MB

Personally, for the P67 board, I would probably get a 2600 or 3770 (non-K) and run it as a cruncher/folder rig. Everyone knows someone affected by cancer.

$55 for a 3670 seems like a pretty good deal. IIRC, Aussie prices are normally higher than USA prices, and I can't find a 3670 for less than $75 right now

cant fold or crunch here - too hot and too cramped a house, and electricity prices are far higher here. many edits to the OP now, but yeah seems like the 3670 is a go, just deciding what intel chip to get - cant find reviews on how its "OC'ing" functions work on non K chips (it can lock the multi at turbo, but i dont know if it works on non K)

a review on the board seems to have multiplier control, i thought only Z series had that?

I have the 3570k and when I got it I was like I'm gonna OC the snot out this thing...but then I realized that there is no point to OC'ing it because its already fast enough for anything out...and then one day I was all like hells yeah time to fire up the VMware and load me up some Wheezy but I couldn't cause I got the "K" model which doesn't do VT and since OC'ing is virtually pointless I regret not getting a non=K model...and not really at the same time....
But anyways I don't see much of a point in OC'ing it unless pointless benchmarks are really really important to you...

Oh yeah not sure if its the same on that MSI as it is on mine but the memory has to go in slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 for dual channel...

just got an i5 2400 + 4GB of DDR3 1333Mhz as a bundle for $150.

from what i've seen online its multi is unlocked enough to reach 3.8GHz, 4GHz with Bclk tweaking.

so :O that happened fast

so i ran a quick Wprime test to compare the 1090T @ 3.6GHz to the i5 at 3.5GHz (i misclicked, shoulda been 3.6)

1090T @ 3.6: | i5 3200 @ 3.5
32M 8.38 | 11.169
1024M 248s | 338s

adjust the scores to reflect the AMD having 50% more cores: (time multiplied by threads available)

32M: 50.28 | 44.67

12% faster per core, and its far from max OC. not worth it had i paid retail, but far from maxed out either (single channel 1333Mhz ram was installed for the intel in this test)
