Help my computer keeps beeping!

Hello i have a problem, i turned my computer back on today after a long period of time and all is well and i get onto the desktop.

I went to transfer stuff from a USB storage stick and thats when the problem began upon inserting the memory stick. My monitor went black but still had the power light on and my computer started bleeping so i turned it off by holding in the power button.

The case is a litte dusty too...

Heeelllppp!!

Update: Now my computer starts beeping when i turn my computer on...what should i do?

Update 2: I tried listening for the beeps again but now my computer doesnt beep. The monitor still stays blank though..

It could be overheating. Check your temps in BIOS.

check the monitor
does it display something like bios info
and listen does it beep normally or not like long beep
and check the monitor button, for some it may yellow on sleep or has no signal or green if it has signal

Hello the monitor displays the usaual lost signal message when comp is off and nothing to display and the power light is blue as per usual. As for the beeps they go like beep...beep...beep etc. Short beeps.

I think infinite short beeps are memory issue, if your BIOS is Award. Try reseating them.

I think the same applies if it's Phoenix.

What steps do i take before attemping re-insertion of RAM or PCI cards etc?

Nope, none, simply turn off the computer, unplug it, open up the computer case, extract the RAM, then insert it back. maybe the memory became loose or something. if the problem continues I would try to extract all expansion cards if you have, except video card.
Try to do clear CMOS by removing the battery and wait a minute or so...

If the problem continues, I would suspect bad RAM stick, or motherboard...

EDIT: I read now you said it doesn't beep anymore, but I would try this anyway because bad RAM/contact can cause the motherboard won't beep

Huh i can use a rubber to clean the RAM and PCI slots? Or you mean the part of the RAM and other cards that goes into the slots?

the contacts.... usualy the gold plated area that makes contact with the parts.

No, I think he's referring the golden pins of the RAM stick,

Of course try to avoid touching the RAM contacts and circuits to avoid damage it with ESD

Right i will leave my computer off for a little while then take everything out including connections to the mobo and blow them all.

I was also worrying about my PSU but i can see inside it from the fan grill and there is little dust up there which is nice.

Good idea also, dust can cause many problems

I think your PSU is good but if you blow it (unplugged) would be a good idea too

because dust in PSU can be very dangerous.

1. turn off computer and disconnect power cable.
2. Remove the side panel from the case.
3. Undo the RAM clips and the RAM should "pop" out.
4. Take a soft brush (like a new toothbrush will do). and then clean the RAM slots. dont use any liquid cleaner. The brush is enough.
5. Now put the RAM back in.
6. Connect the power cable and turn on the PC. if it works, close the side panel.

Right, although i have no can of compressed air i think i managed to get some dust outta the way. One of the things inside the PSU looked a little fuzzy and i cant blow hard enough to clean it fully but i think it is alright.

OK my computer is still bleeping after re-insterting GPU and RAM and giving the insides a little clean so i think it might just be too old. Time for a new computer?

Note: All fans are working and the CPU cooler is fitted stably.

Try booting with one stick of RAM, at a time. Then switch them out and try another.

Make sure you have un-plugged any and all usb devices, including anything plugged into the USB motherboard headers.(If you have a usb keyboard try another keyboard).

Try re-seating the CPU and replacing the Thermal Interface Material (T.I.M.) between the CPU and Heatsink(cooler)

Try, like said before, re-setting the bios.

Read the manual... it gives instructions and procedures for the suggestions given in the thread.

Besides what 95viper said, if you have another DDR RAM stick, try it, to pinpoint possible motherboard or RAM issue.

Also, I would watch the GPU maybe it can be faulty...
