Hi all,

I really need to help to set up my network correctly as I can't for the life of me figure it out.
I'd really like to get port forwarding to work so that I can access my computers via WAN.

My current setup is as follows:

Internet > D-Link DSL-526E (Modem) > Linksys (DDWRT)

Both the D-Link and the Linksys have DHCP capabilities and i think this is where everything is going wrong.

I've simply set up the D-Link router to recognize the Linksys as a DMZ. This works fine for internet access, but it's causing me hell when trying to run any kind of server.

The D-Link has an IP of 192.168.1.1 and it assigns the Linksys an IP of 192.168.1.2. The Linksys then manages all other connected clients addresses.

The Linksys is currently set up with an internal IP of 192.168.0.1, but it is using the D-Link assigned address and any time I try to change this to 192.168.1.2, the whole thing goes to hell :(

Strangely enough. I am able to access the DD-WRT router using either 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.0.1!

Ideally I just want my DD-WRT router to manage everything and the D-Link one to be a dumb device, just providing internet access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've been struggling with this for an extremely long time (not figured it out in years!) and now I have some spare time on my hands and a RPi, i want to be able to actually connect from WAN.

Here are some pics of my config screens to help.

your gateway is 192.168.1.1, your first router should handle DHCP and be set at 192.168.1.1 and your second router should be setup in bridge mode and have 192.168.1.2 as its ip address since you are setting them as the same subnet mask.

Even better. Set the modem from the ISP to bridge mode and use your own router.

OP should be able to do this in NAT settings on the modem.

Then just configure the router as normal since it will then pull a public IP.

I tried setting it as DHCP Relay and none.
Both options result in a loss of internet connection and I have to do a hard-reset and restore old setting to get it back.
Below are the options that I see. Is this where I should be setting it to bridged mode? I can sort-of figure my way around DD-WRT, but the D-Link's firmware is really hard to understand.

@EasyRhino - Do you mean that my modem should be set as 192.168.1.2 and then my router as 192.168.1.1?
Ohterwise, I don't want the modem (D-link) to handle DHCP. I use a VPN and other features on the DD-WRT and would really like to continue being able to use them.

The manual for the router is here: http://files.dlink.com.au/Products/DSL-526E/Manuals/DSL-526E_T1_Manual_v1.00.pdf

It hasn't been a lot of help so far :(

So what I'd do is disable the DHCP server on the D-Link, set a static IP address on the DD-WRT router. You'll still be double-NATed though which can be a problem.

You could put your modem/router combo in bridge mode and use your DD-WRT router as your gateway.

Do you need any credentials or PPPOE for your Internet connection?

If not, if you can setup your modem in transparent bridge mode, or bridge mode, and use your DD-WRT for gateway services, you'll be all set!

Yeah. Double NAT is the problem i'm trying to avoid.

Thanks for the link, unfortunately my setup screen doesn't look like that as it's a 526E not B and so the screens are completely different.

My ISP requires credentials and supports PPPOE, I can see where to put them into DD-WRT and have tried this, yet my modem still seems to connect using said credentials even when I set it as a DHCP relay.

I'll keep at it, but it's driving me nuts.

I've tried forwarding the ports i want open from the modem to the router, then in the router to the computer which should, in theory, work (It did yesterday evening). However, the ports still appear closed to the internet :(

Edit - I found this link (Indonesian) Gives me some things I can try tomorrow. https://oktavianus-myjourney.blogspot.com/2014/09/dlink-dsl-526e-sebagai-bridge.html
Seems like I need to set it to 1483 Bridged in there

The D-Link doesn't support bridge mode, from what I can tell. The 526B does, but the 536E doesn't. Likely because the ISP doesn't want it to, so D-Link made it to make the ISP happy.

Double NAT isn't a problem if the D-Link supports DMZ. This is how your setup should be.

D-Link:
LAN IP: 192.168.1.1
DHCP: Enabled
DHCP Reservation for DD-WRT Router: 192.168.1.2(Only if the D-Link supports DHCP reservations.)
DMZ: 192.168.1.2

DD-WRT:
WAN: AutoConfiguration - DHCP
LAN/Local IP: 192.168.0.1
DHCP: Enabled
Forward any ports you want forwarded on this router.

DMZ is the next best thing to Bridge mode. It forwards everything to that one IP you set in DMZ. Your internal network would be on the 192.168.0.1 subnet.

what is under your NAT tab on the dlink? DHCP is just hading our IP addresses. You arent going to find what you need their.

I think I got it working:

upload_2016-12-23_1-22-47.png

The correct WAN IP is showing in DD-WRT now :)

It was a matter of setting it up in 1843 Bridged in the options that set up the internet connection.

I'm assuming now that I'm on a double NAT network as DD-WRT is handling the PPPOE authentication, right?

yup perfect, thats what i was going to say next. if it wasnt under that it would be under PPPoE. and probably not. The service is probably linked to the modems mac address. Thats probably how they are verifying service.

Thanks. It's actually my own modem, rather than the ISPs, but they could have linked the MAC when I first registered. The firmware on this D-Link is a real PITA to get your head around!
There's so much support for DD-WRT finding how to do things is 100X easier.

I just found how to access my modem in bridge mode too :D

I'm pretty excited to actually be able to use my RPi as a mini-server now!

Yup, I replace modems in my shops with my own when we get service started at a new location and if I want it now without waiting I give them a call and have them establish the connection manually. Its pretty standard.

Oddly enough, I can still access my DD-WRT router using 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.2. I'm guessing that's because the modem is still doing DHCP, but I have no idea how I can actually have 2 IPs for 1 device.

I guess if it works, i shouldn't mess with it.

You have a WAN IP and a LAN IP, each has a MAC address (per LAN connection) and an IP address.

.0.1 is the LAN and .1.2 is the WAN from what I've read earlier on your thread. Depending on if you do VLAN and other subnets you could have a lot more IP addresses for just that one device...but that's not really what this thread is about.

Glad you are getting things sorted! :)

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
well once you enable bridge mode, you can simply shut off the DHCP server enabled on the modem and honestly probably should.
