you need to leave your ram alone until you get the CPU figured out.

Well here is the update 470 wasnt stable Orthos failed after 3mins, so i decided to mess with the ram for a bit, and putting the ram to 3-3-3-9 2T @2.3 caused a total failure and wouldnt post so i had to reset CMOS losing my 1 hour and 30min OC on the CPU... stupid ram.....

use guru dude play with one or more of the user setting.. when u have it right set the default setting and it writes direct to the bios.. no need to do this at first thow..

get the user setting wrong and it boots back to whatever the default/bios is set at.. it saves a lot of pissing about..

dont use the abit settings.. just the user ones.. 1 2 and 3.. they aint permament.. u cant alter memory speed/timings with guru everything else u can..

my method is to go into the bios set memory timing and basic memory speed/voltage.. turn off all the auto stuff then do it from guru.. if u dont turn off the auto stuff it gets reset every time the system reboots.. if u do each user setting will get remembered by guru for the next time u want to play with guru.. dont set guru to start with windows.. or go to last settings used.. guru is magic when u figure it out..

Messing around bit the ram wont do anything under 4-4-4, so i im keeping ti right now 2.2v 4-4-4-10 2T

as for the CPU i got i back up to 460FSB, 4150Ghz and im running 3dmark05 right now, For some reason Orthos is messed up everything fails rightaway not matter the FSB.. so hmph

Temps are 47C/56C
1.44v Core
CPU VTT 1.13
DDR2 2.2v
Ram Divider set to 1:1 Ratio( seems my memory cant do 1100+ because its 4GB/4x1GB sticks)

ill post a 3dmark05 sceenie IF it finishes it ;)

at first keep the memory as slow as u can.. mine by the way is 4 1 gig sticks.. u possibly need to up the memory voltage slightly and the northbridge with 4 sticks.. i think its volts u are lacking when trying to go past 4.2 gig..

volts will get u there but the hard bit is finding how little.. he he

It cant be volts, first it wont OC past 470, 480 just BSODs, even tried it with a 8.5 multi and got the BSOD(only at 3.990ghz)

my Volts are 1.33 for the Nbridge
the CPU was at 1.470-1.4850 tried both
CPU VTT 1.13 and 1.17 ive gotten so sick of it all i cannot get it stable @ 4150ghz it failed even with those volts, if you could be so kind to OC it for me :)

and i had the ram @ 5-5-5-15 2T so the ram wouldnt be the problem(besides getting it past 1000mhz)

NB 1.5 isnt that quite high? ive tried it at 1.44 with no luck, ill bother with it all when i feel like right now im drained.

But if you can Trog, please list out for me the Voltage you use to get a stable OC at 4.0Ghz

my x38 needs 1.7v on the NB to run 4.5ghz.

your ballistix are crazy!!! they wont run at low speeds on my maximus. the higher the better. i've tightened the timmings to 4-4-4-12 and they run smooth up to 1200mhz.

Lucky you, i couldnt even get em to do 1150mhz on my 780i when i had both of them the timings were 5-5-5-15 2T @2.3v =/ am i doing something wrong with my ram?

Even without changing the FSB i tried to get em at 1000 with a 1:50 and it wouldnt even post had to reset CMOS

your trying to hard too early. just get the cpu running good first. that's the first step. then do the ram.

there are certain straps that the ram doesn't like to run in. i can boot the tracers at 1190mhz just fine but if i drop the strap to the lower 980mhz it wont boot at all. you know the ram runs fine at 980 so what's the deal.... it's the strap not set right.

my memory is lowly 800 stuff.. it makes 1000 at cas 5 but its on the edge at 2.3 volts.. u should not have problems at 1 to 1..

how i tweaked up to 4.5 at minimum volts.. i used guru..

dont waste time running stability tests that take ages to run that come after u have it right just to make sure..

my voltage settings are all listed up above for 4 gig and 4.4 gig..

run guru.. pick the user 2 option.. find somthing that u know works.. lets say 4 gig..

set user 2 for 4 gig stable.. open up user 3.. copy the known stable setting into user 3.. up the fsb by a reasonable (10 mhz) amount then run a quick super pi to 1 million..

in theory it should bomb.. he he.. if it does it tells u your 4 gig setting were on the edge.. if it dosnt bomb it tells u your 4 gig user 2 (slower) settings are in the ball park for real stability..

if it does bomb.. raise one of the voltages the main one being the vcore.. run the quick super pi again.. keep tweaking slowly upwards with the user 3 settings..

basically u will reach a point when each small fsb increase needs a voltage raise.. even a 5 mhz increase will need more vcore..

this i would describe as the point of diminishing returns.. it starts to bite big time much over 4.3 gig for me..

which is why i have my benching speed set at 490 fsb and not 500..

its possible the chip has what is called an fsb wall at 500.. at 500 my memory and the lot is on the edge.. which is where the extra 1/2 mulitpier 8500 chips come in handy... he he

u must know for certain what your memory will do.. i would set it at cas 5 and 1 to 1..

three things.. memory.. chip clock speed at a given voltage.. possible chip fsb wall..

cos u are running a quick and dirty super pi to one million test.. throwing some more volts at things then taking time to lower them afterwards is one way..

after super pi success come a quick-ish 2006 run.. the quick way is find a setting that will do the 2006 run.. then slow things down a bit for real stability..

my 4.5 setting will do the 2006 run.. my 4.4 setting will play games.. my 4 gig setting will run forever.. stability is as stability does..

i could probably run a nice cool 4.2 gig 24/7 but i like round figures.. he he

having guru and not useing it will cause added pain in the pursuit of exact settings for any given speed.. as u now know i am an abit guru fan.. he he

trog

ps.. the best way to use guru is to have the user 3 setting in use as u play with it. the first basic test is that it will bomb (or not) as soon as u click the apply button.. if it dosnt super pi is next followed by the 2006 run..

make sure guru aint set to use the last used setting or to fire up with windows.. if it is set this way it will bomb each time it gets to windows and it tries to use the last dodgy setting.. something one learns the hard way.. he he

dude, your dissapointed because you cant obtain 4.5ghz? that's the max that the chip can boot at. can't you just be happy with 4ghz running 24/7? that's way better than your other chip. plus, the 45nm chip outperforms the 65nm chip hands down. stop chasing numbers and be happy with what you have. you've had the chip 1 day and your already giving up.

just one thing fits.. the beauty of guru.. the machine dosnt have to boot at 4.5 gig.. it can boot at whatever the default or bios is set at.. this could be stock..

does my machine boot at 4.5 gig.. or 4.4 gig.. i have no f-cking idea.. cos it dosnt have to and i havnt tried..

what i did find thow was i had to up the northbridge and vcore a smidge to get a reliable cold boot at 4 gig.. the set up seems to need slightly higher voltages for the first boot of the day than it does to run reliably (or reboot) when warmed up..

my machine is set to boot at 4 gig.. which is the bios or guru default setting..

the other wierd and wonderful thing i am doing is actually useing speedstep.. breaking all the OC rules rules.. he he

"crazy" is a relative word.. he he he

i moved from the 8 multiplier 6750 chip to the 9 multiplier 8400 chip just to get a nice stable 4 gig 24/7.. no real logic i just wanted 4 gig.. i got more than what i wanted.. but then again i didnt want or expect anything "crazy".. he he he

for whatever silly reason 4 gig will keep me happy for quite some time 3.8 would have continued to niggle at me..

its an abit thing.. they put a special chip on the board to talk to the bios via windows..

foxconn have something similar on their newer O/C boards.. i have used an abit board with guru for some years.. having to reset the cmos every time u make a balls up now seems totally primitive to me..

the ip35 pro has the guru chip.. the lesser abit boards dont.. it just enables on the fly speed changes and helps big time with fine tuning.. bugger things up and all it requires is a reboot..

plus i can run nice and stable or silly on the edge speeds at the click of a button.. especially good for quick on the edge of stability benching scores..

UGuru is a nice feature, it came on my low-end AS8-V that's still in use and is very handy. OC in windows, voltages, bus speeds, all the likes of which is very nice. I still prefer BIOS overclocking though, as the Abit interface is not something I played with for more than a couple of months...but it's still a great utility that others should try a little harder to copy imo.

Glad to see all the 4.0 OC's in here, I'm still happy with 3.5...but if I decide to upgrade from my trusty 6300 at least I have a good idea of the next chip I'd wanna get! :D
