Greetings,

I am trying to economically upgrade my system. You can have a peek at the current specs.

I did splurge on a graphics card. I use Prepar3D and it is gradually moving its work to the GPU. The new version wants 4+ GB of VRam.

I have a 4770K processor. Didn't do too well in the silicone lottery (4.4 GHz). I can't afford to buy a new Motherboard, processor and memory. Otherwise I'd look at Skylake and DDR4.

I have a Hero VI motherboard. The 4790K will work in the board with the older Z87 chipset. I thought that with the new graphics card and if I purchased the upgraded processor, I would have a machine that would be able to handle the next few advances in software.

Can anyone confirm that the 4790K will run correctly in the Hero VI? Or is it a question of being compatible, but not by much.

The final question is, given I'll have a bit of extra horsepower in the GPU, is it worth the 400 dollars for a 4970K? I should point out that while Prepar3D is moving more work to the graphics card, it is kinda CPU intensive. Would the extra 3-4 hundred MHz make a lot of difference?

I'm new here. I got a bunch of help for a PSU question earlier. You're a great bunch of guys.

Thanks,
Graham

Hi,

Going from a 4770K to a 4790K for $400 is not worth it in my book. You most than likely won't feel any gains.

Yes, your motherboard is compatible with a 4790K but it requires a BIOS update.

No, 300MHz wont make a lot of difference.

With the 4770k @4.4 that you have, you're not going to do much better with a 4790k no matter how high you clock it. I would absolutely advise against it.

Keep what you have and enjoy it, for it is a nice setup that will treat you well.
