So today , when playing Rome 2 , i decided to turn graphic settings to maximum just to test my gpu . After a 30 min battle , i checked HardwareMonitor and was horrify by the max gpu temp , 83C degrees !!! Is that too hot for my gpu ? The fan was at 50% when that happen , should i increase fanspeed ? My idle temp is 37C and even Aida 64 GPU only stress test it reach 81C max . Please give me some advice on how to lower my gpu temp , thank for reading .

first, how about your airflow? is that good
second the setting, 50% is balancing between noise and cooling, if you want it colder make lit like 70% but it will give you more noise
if you want to get better result you can consider better thermal paste

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
first, how about your airflow?is that good
airflow inside a case is pretty important pushing fresh air inside the case and pull out the heat outside ...

second the setting, 50% is balancing between noise and cooling, if you want it colder make lit like 70% but it will give you more noise
use EVGA Precision X or MSI afterburner for setting up you fan curve,

you can set up several settings, for temps and fan speed and noise, when gaming most people use to stick on a headset for a better experience, or almost on my case, so noisy in most cases is not even noticeable,
I tried to keep my card under 60C using Gigabyte's OC_Guru II

Peche's settings are:
  • temps under or: 30c fan settings: 35% fan speed
  • temps under or: 40c fan settings: 45% fan speed
  • temps under or: 50c fan settings: 55% fan speed
  • temps under or: 60c fan settings: 70% fan speed
  • temps under or: 70c fan settings: 80% fan speed
  • temps under or: 80c fan settings: 85% fan speed
  • temps under or: 90c fan settings: 90% fan speed
  • temps under or: 95c fan settings: 100% fan speed
i like to keep my card cool, :D

if you want to get better result you can consider better thermal paste

How much time do you have with that card?
i use to replace the paste every year, i love Arctic Cooling MX4, and also i have used Arctic Silver 5 on my Ggigabyte GTX 760OC, decent but Arctic MX4 outperforms AS5...!

Well, the card was released a little over 2 years ago so if your card is about 2 years old then it might help to take the shroud off and blow the heat sink out real good and use some q-tips where you can to get the stubborn dust out if any.

I set a fan curve on my cards to keep the GPU around 60 to 65 C. It's not really necessary as you can run a GPU temp way higher than that but I like to keep it cool and the fan noise doesn't bother me a bit when gaming with the speakers turned up.

Airflow is ok i think , plenty of room in my case with 1 fan in front and 2 fans uptop , i will try to turn fanspeed up cause i wear headphone anyway
Maybe not running at max settings will help..?
OK , this may be the simplest solution yet most effective , i think this will definitely work :D

Alright , i'll clean the heatsink and increase fanspeed , i wear headphone anyway , thank for the tips

hell?? Mars?... Sahara...?
temps could be lower, card may have dried paste... also a cleaning time may be a win too.. dust its a excellent heat keeper on hardware...

never had a card top out much under 90c with any setup in the last 10 years

Yeah, while throttling.

the 7790 must be a very different card than my gts 250, 6950 and r9 290 all are/were if it'll start throttling at a temperature as low as 83c

Oh man , it worked , i take out the card , clean the fan , apply new paste and use MSI Afterburner and adjust fanspeed exactly as your . Just tried Rome 2 max setting again and this time it's 71C max . That is prrety good i think , the problem is fanspeed is up to 80% at that point and it sound like a vaccum cleaner . Anyway thank to you and everyone participate in this thread for giving advices and suggestions , i'm prrety delight to see 12C degrees drop :lovetpu:

Also, if you use the HIS iTurbo utility it has a quiet and a cool mode to automatically adjust fan curves. If it is loud but cool you can press quiet and it'll be warmer but quieter. If it is too warm you can press cooler and it'll be cooler but louder.

My GT220 would throttle hard at 75c and my GTX660 starts at 70c. Of course I have a custom fan curve for the 660 and I no longer have the 220, but the only time any desktop GPU of mine got seriously hot was when my 220's fan cord was stuck in it's own fan. Turbo speeds turning off due to heat is a sign of throttling in case you didn't know.

Thermal interface materials are something pretty mysterious, some people claim that never degrades, expires or need to be removed and reapplied, I will die with the same idea that thermal craps must be replaced minimum every year o year and a half, the use and heat cycles may interfere for sure,

Also as a part of decent maintenance on hardware, removing the dust on hardware will make them work flawless so much longer, Dust retains heat..attracts more filthy craps… I have seen fans running slowly because of dust and filthiness, also have seen fans died because of a exceed of flintiness and dust…

I have a question , how do you keep MSI Afterburner fan curve active even when you turn it off ? If that not possible , how to make it auto turn on everytime i start my pc ?

There is a box you can check to have it start with Windows. I'm at work right now so I can't look to see where it is but it's not hard to find.

my GPU settings are managed by OC guru II from gigabyte, that application will start with windows, as @64K said, there should be a check box of "start With Windows" or apply buttom, let me check MSI afterburner ... with version do you have?

Regards, ,
There is a box you can check to have it start with Windows. I'm at work right now so I can't look to see where it is but it's not hard to find.

I found it , just tick the 'Start with Window' and it's good to go , thank for the help guys , appreciate it .
