Horrible performance for farcry 1?

I was replaying some old fps games recently and I was astonished to find that my 4ghz qx9650 plus 5870 can't even play farcry 1 smoothly. Actually not just farcry1, but some other old dx9 titles as well. I am using the lastest catalyst 13.3 beta driver. The game is basically unplayable. FPS constantly drops down to below 10.

Last time I played farcry was last year using catalyst 12.8. Is AMD dropping support for old dx9 games? Should I use catalyst 12.8 instead of the newest ones. I do play newer games like Crysis 3 though.

Best to start with using older drivers I suppose. I was just installing the original Far Cry, I'll see how it goes.

Well.. Things are working very well:

All settings are maxed out (x4AA) @ 2560x1440 Catalyst 13.3 beta 1100/1525 clocks.

When I tried to run it initially it didn't want to work. Did a windows update, restarted and things worked fine.. other than a slightly long loading screen (on an SSD).

Guess it is my 5870's fault. Maybe I shouldnt use the latest catalyst on a very old card.

As long as the current driver supports your model (5870), using the current driver is a good idea, not a bad one. Something else is up in your case.

It depends on the game. Newer drivers can break things that were fine with older drivers, especially if your card is not of the latest architecture. I've heard some people claim that drivers from late 2011 were better for their 5xxx cards, etc. Again, depends on whether you are having issues with certain games or not. AMD GPUs have undergone huge architecture changes for each of the last two generations.

So I unintalled Catalyst 13.3, deleted all related file as well as registry keys. After reinstalling 12.10, my CCC keeps crashing. Not just that, I can't even open 3DMark as well as other graphic benchmarks. What could be wrong? You can upgrade but not downgrade?

You may need to run some sort of registry/driver cleaner.

On a separate note, did you ever download and install the DirectX web installer? http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

So do I still need it even if my graphic card is of dx11 architecture? Doesn't DX11 cover all DX9 components?

It's doubtful that you have all of the DX11 components either if you haven't updated anything.

I get the latest directx runtime from microsoft. It says I already have the newest version and no installation is necessary. Any ideas guys?
