I've just built a new PC for someone and they need me to transfer their purchased music to the new machine. I've a feeling it's not going to be as simple as copy and paste.

Anyone done this before?

There used to be a backup library function back in 2005... no idea how it is now

None of the methods outlined here seem to be "from old PC to new PC"

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527

So would this work?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751

That should work. I did this for my wife last year, taking the library from her laptop to a desktop, and I used an external hdd as mentioned in your links specially the second link.

It worked fairly well, though I think I did lose a little bit and had to find the manually. But all in all it wasn't the bad. :)

Completely unhelpful comment, but iTunes is one of the reasons I've never liked Apple. Give me file explorer and Winamp or WMP any day.

You should be able to just copy the iTunes folder in My Music directory over to the new PC. As long as you copy it over to the same directory on the new PC, and I believe that you will have to use the same user name that is on the old PC. That way the directory structure is still the same.
This method has worked for me about 8 months ago when I had to reinstall Windows and completely redo my C:.

The way I have done it is to install a fresh version of iTunes to the new pc then delete the directories and copy and paste the old ones in its place. This way all the custom covers and what not are correct and you don't lose any of your organizational efforts.

From memory this works very well!

Cheers for replies, I just grabbed her library from her iPad and it synced to the new PC. Hate using iTunes, such a slow, bloated POS.

And you have to wonder how much of that slowness is sending data off to Apples servers about what you've got on your PC?

Oh sure Apple is the only company whos products 'phone home'.

Though I can't really argue that iTunes doesn't kinda suck, especially more recent versions. Even the interface blows worse now.
