I have this processor:

Intel Pentium 4/ 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB L2 Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail

I just have the stock fan on there, but I have (or will have shortly) 5 Cooler Master fans in my case + a fan that blows my 9800 Pro's heat out a PCI slot. My CPU hangs around 30°C when idle and I've never seen it get over about 44°C when playing games and such.

How much do you think I could overclock it? I've have a friend that says he pushed his to 3.6GHz with stock cooling and has had no issues, but that seems like a lot of overclocking and I don't want to risk any damage to it. Reading the comments on NewEgg from people with my processor, many have pushed it to 3.2GHz which seems like a safer plan.

Any suggestions?

i have the same cpu and i OC to 3.3ghz. any more than that and my comp wont start. i think my mobo wont let it or something.

but tell me how u get the cpu to stay under 44C with the stock fan because i have a 95mm fan blowing right on it and its at about 34C idle and can go to 52C when gaming.
and with 5 fans in your case i think u could push it well over 3.2, maybe 3.4 - 3.6

I have this motherboard:

ASUS "P4P800-E Deluxe" i865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU -RETAIL

Anyway, no idea how it stays that cool. I have an older version of this case (no top fan holes):

RAIDMAX Black Aluminum Gaming Case with 420W Power Supply, Model "668WBP" -RETAIL

It's aluminum, so it may help. Currently, I have the 2 crappy rear case fans (80mm) on exhaust and a side fan (80mm) blowing on my graphics card. (I had the 5 Cooler Master fans in there, but I didn't like the color, so I decided to exchange them). I'll be placing 2 more fans as intakes at the very front of my case to further help once I get my replacement fans.

Currently, this is my temperatures and fan speeds:

Case: 30°C/86°F
CPU: 36°C/97°F
CPU Fan: 2122RPM
PSU Fan: 1654RPM

I suspect the high temperatures are from me currently having Winamp open watching a video and the original crappy fans in the case.

And again, I don't want to damage anything. Perhaps 3.4 or something is a safe idea...

if you don't want to damage anything - just keep the Vcore @ its default value and increase the FSB in smalls increments like 2-3mhz. boot and make sure that your system is stable / prime95 torture test & superpi /

It's not quite the same but my 2.4 runs 3.0 easly...but that's with other cooling.
So 3.4 seems pretty save if ya use stock cooling..

haha, i just ordred the raidmax 686. similar looking to that one. is the '686' the one u have or is it newer than the '668'?
well anyway if ur saying 30C or 36C is high, then i sure as hell cant wait till monday when my case comes in:)
neway my mobo is the P4P800 (nothing more) and it wont let me OC past 3.3ghz.
and your board is better than mine, plus you have better cooling. id say you could go from 10% - 20% in the bios. and thats probably the safest way to go.

I have the older one - no top port and no removable mobo tray thing. I bought mine like a week before NewEgg put the new version on their site.
