Hey guys, I have 2x2 Gskill Ripjaws RAM. Stock specs are DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24-2N.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

From what I have read it is fairly common for AMD motherboards to have the speed set at 1333. My Gigabyte motherboard is of course set to 200 bus frequency with a memory clock of 6.66 giving me 1333 for RAM. I tried just upping the clock to 8 but that also changed my timings to 11-11-11-29. I could just manually set the timing back to stock but I'm cautious of that. I assume there is a reason the automatically went to 11-11-11-29.

Gskill recommends raising the bus to 240 and leaving the clock at 6.66 to give me my full 1600. It seems odd to me that they would recommend that, seeing as how it would affect the whole system. As it stands I have a modest oc on my 955BE by upping the multiplier to 19 giving 3.8Mhz. I know I could just drop the multiplier back down and be done with that but, what about the rest of the system?

What I'm looking for I guess is the best way to get 1600 out of the RAM.

If you prefer to keep your bus at 200, then as you said, just up the memory clock to 8 and set the timings and voltages yourself. That's what I did to get 1600 out of my RAM anyway, as I didn't want to up my bus.

As of now I do. I have played around with upping it a little here and there getting to 4GHz. I'm still doing a lot of reading though about the other parts of the computer affected and what to look for in that regard. Problem is if I mess this rig up I would be without for at least a few weeks, so I play it very safe.

It's not a problem with the ram per se, moreless lies with the Phenom II IMC supporting 1333 natively. So to get 1600 in theory, overclocking the IMC as well.

EDIT

See what happens when you push a higher CPU-NB voltage.

Is this in conjunction with raising the bus frequency to 240? As of now I manually raised the memory clock to 8 and lowered the timings to stock values. A run of maxxmem showed ~8% increase in memory read.

upping the ref clock also ups the Northbridge clock. AMDs NB is supposed to be st at 2600MHz but due to the 200 ref clock and 10x mul for the NB, its only at 2000MHz

so whats the adv of a higher NB?

i have my NB at 2700MHz, 1.45V and my RAM gives me 11000MB/s copy, which would be ~9000MB/s if the clock was at 2000MHz

huge performance diff.

This is on my list to do since the board says it's rated for 2600 but set at 2000. Doesn't even seem like an OC to me, just putting it where it should have been from the start. The more I up different places manually it is starting to make since to bring them all back to stock settings, up the ref clock, the make smaller adjustments at specific places.

exactly.
is not about increasing a lot on one thing, its the little things everywhere that count!
