i also liked the xwing/tie fighter series of games. a nice "fly around a shoot stuff while doing misions" game. i wish lucasarts would remake that game for todays PCs.

*goes misty eyed* i miss the Wing Commander series too. Mark Hamill as Blair!
there's a few games still out there: Tachyon: The Fringe, Darkstar One, the X series. if you've played Freelancer, did you try Starlancer? it's its predecessor; single player focus.

As do I! I would love a new Wing Commander game. It's definitely in my top 10 of PC games.

Privateer I believe is one of the best games based off of the Wing Commander universe.

I know it's not Wing Commander but...

Independence War, and Independence War 2 were good...

And Freespace 1/2 both awesome space sim's as well.

Got that to mate, I really enjoyed those games but it had a weird ending and you could carrying on playing it after you finished the mission as well killing his brother

The only recent game I enjoyed was Evochron Legends, it's no action packed sim/shooter like Freespace or Wingcommander, plus it's indie, but it was pretty enjoying and the physics and real-time planet decent and such were quite neat, plus being able to play online (mostly where I learned how to play the game too) was quite cool. The guy that makes it is pretty cool, updates it to what the players would like to see added, changed, etc. I got that early this year and Freespace 2 for $5 from Gog.com, then I downloaded all the opensource content, which is massive...and pretty badass. I highly recommend both to feed your needs.

I do miss the X-wing (vs) Tie Fighter series...many, many hours spent on all of them. Wing commander too, was good fun for a more cinematic kind of experience, though Freespace blew me away, and 2 rocked...I had to get it again, with all the open source goodies, it's quite fun.

There were a couple other sims/space shooters I tried, but they weren't memorable...some were horrible.

Privateer was Grand Theft Auto in space (that ran on a 486)

Wing Commander innovated multi-direction plots, in-game audio, 3d graphics

    Loved it!

I loved Wing Commander too. Here is something I found a while back. It's a new version of Wing Commander called Wing Commander Saga. Here is a link to where you can download it. http://wcsaga.com/

Wing commander was more of my dads game. I enjoyed Falcon 3.0 Gold and the Descent series when it was at its peak. Me and him used to play Freespace for like months getting all the medals.
