I may be running into ~$2400 soon, and I intend to sink it into a kick ass computer - I'm eye-balling Xeon CPUs but I'm wondering if there's really a huge performance difference between the i7 line and the current Xeons. Basically, I need a rig that'll still tear through a game in 2012, graphics card aside. Once I settle on a CPU, I'll need a kick ass board to go with it as well :D All ideas (AMD included) welcome.

i7's are Xeons. You can easily build a rig with half that amount and still tear through a game in 2012, the way the game developers are going.

Would go for an i7 rig, but I heard the new i7 chip is coming soon?
5850/5870 is good for now, just grab another one in the future when you feel that your rig is getting old.

Go for the X58-UD5P mobo instead and use TRUE for cooling

So a Xeon or dual Opertons won't be a huge margin over an i7?
