I think my PSU has died.

It's been a long time since I posted here and a not that much longer since I've had to do this so I'm a bit rusty.

For the past month or so I've been having an issue with my PC, to get it to turn on I'd have to turn off the power at the wall, leave it 30 seconds, then turn it back on before my PC would turn on. If it was just left overnight it wouldn't turn on at all.

Once it turns on it works perfectly, no crashing, errors etc.

However as of this morning it won't even do that. After the ritual, it just turns on for a second and back off again.

Now obviously I'm thinking it's the PSU at fault here. I've already checked it wasn't the cable by trying a different one but same deal. Is there anything else it could be?

Start with removing everything not needed to post, ie hdd, gpu and so on. Reseat cables.

like what @Frick has said and also check your case switch connector at the mobo end, remove the existing cables and then restart with a screwdriver. If it starts OK then the problem is the case.

You could also go into BIOS and use the setting to start your computer from K/B or mouse click.

Obvious and fastest way is to try another psu if you can

When it doesn't turn on that means nothing is powered on MB? Not even fans spinning?

You can try to make some basic measurements of the PSU if you have a multimeter around.
Remove all the cables from MB and jump start it (a short between green and any black wire on ATX connector). If it starts measure voltages (red +5V, orange +3.3V and yellow +12V) and also measure pin 8 on ATX connector (gray one) <- this one is Power Good signal it should be >2.5V if everything is OK with your PSU.

Ok, Update:

I pulled everything but the Mobo, CPU, RAM and GPU. Turns on fine.

So i slowly reconnected everything. Fans first to check it wasn't a short in one of those. No problems.

Reconnected Hard Drives 1 by 1, no problems until I reconnected the last one. Problem reoccured.

Disconnected all hard drives, tested the one that had caused the problem. Turned on fine, hard drive seen in Windows.

Reconnected all Hard Drives. Would not turn on.

Basically if I turn on the PC from cold with all Hard Drives connected it starts, fans spin for a second, then dies.

If I turn on the PC with 1 disconnected, then connect it after it's on (I have 2 hot swap bays in my case) everything works perfect.

The PSU was bought in July 2011 (Coolermaster Silent Pro M 1000W), is it possible it's degraded over time and I need a new one?

Yep PSU. Just try another one to confirm

You can also short test it. If it does the same thing then that's the issue

500w should fire that up. Just to test it

But try the short test. See if it starts every time

It starts every single time if I don't have all my hard drives connected. I think it's basically overloaded on cold boot. I can get it to boot then reconnect the hard drives with no issues.

Sounds similar to what happened to me here.

Check SMART hdd.
Run Windows memory diagnostic.

Try to trigger the crash yourself, run linpack. Then Furmark.

In my case it crashed on Furmark and the problem persisted even when I tried another GPU.
Probably the 12 V rail wasn't giving enough juice in my case because changing PSU worked.

Thanks Black Panther. I'll definitely check out the HDDs, but it doesn't seem to discriminate about which drive it is. Basically if I have all 7 drives connected on boot, nada. If 6, works fine.

psu sounds like its no longer capable of providing enough power to spin the drives up or its got a bad rail

I agree with this, sounds like the initial spin up of all those drives is overloading the PSU. Thing is, it shouldn't be overloading a 1000w PSU. So my best guess is the PSU is on its way out.

Superflower will sell under their own name as well as XFX, EVGA and most of your 1600W+ builds. Great wall makes OCZ/corsair depending on line. Both make more those are just the ones I know.

@Darknova by the way it shows that your PSU has a 5 year warranty might be worth sending it back and getting a freebie?

If the powersupply can no longer handle that load that means it has degraded would you feel safe having a ticking time bomb in your rig? What happens if something has a slight spike during a game and all of your shit is fried.

well... its a 5yo psu.

i dont think a PSU have degraded capacitors within only 5 years. Please correct me if im wrong

and this PSU have a lot of protections (OVP/UVP/OCP/OPP/OTP/SCP/OLP), so i dont think its gonna fry your hardware.

But thats just my opinion.

I would take a fell several tests to see if a new psu is REAAAALY necessary.

Yes, it's not the hard drive at fault, it doesn't matter which hard drive is unplugged, as long as 1 of them in unplugged on boot.
