Hi guys, I'm a noob overclocking and I just did a simple overclock to 4.2ghz on my processor with a change in the multiplier.

Now my question is: on idle, the highest temp of one of the cores is 45c and on load using prime95 for about 30 mins the highest temp is 75c, is this good? because i think the 45 idle is a bit high or is it ok? I'm not concerned about the load temp, but I want your informed opinion :)

PD: I'm using Core Temp to get these temperature readings.
thanks in advance.

Idle temperature is meaningless if the load temperature is fine, which it is (75c). My 4770K averages 90c 24/7 and I've yet to have any problems (using a Thermaltake Water 2.0 Performer water cooler mounted in the front of my chassis, and CPU is clocked at 4.3GHz).

If I'm not mistaken, you should aim to keep your 2600k under like 72-73*C. What cooler are you using?

If you just upped the multi, you may be using more vcore than necessary so you could try lowering voltage in attempt to lower temps.

Edit: you can't really compare temps of a 3770k and 4770k to the 2600k directly.

Actually, I think you have something wrong going on. Your temps are equal to my 2600k's temps, but my 2600k is OC'ed to 4.5ghz with only a H60 cooler.

I think like Sasqui pointed out, you've got to set your voltage manually. I'm only up to 4Ghz, but that's on 1.21v under load, and no core has ever gone above 56. Leaving it on auto the MB will add way more juice than you need, producing more heat.

Get a screenshot of CPU-Z while CPU is under load to see where your voltage is at... It usually is a bit different than what is set in bios.

I ran prime95 for 8-10 mins and it never passed the 73c, and this is the highest voltage the cpuz gave me.

actually i may have mistaken the 73 with 75, because i did that test yesterday, if everything looks normal i may rerun it later to confirm, and see what you guys think xD

Looks normal to me. The 120W power figure + voltage says it all.

Really Dave? I have more GHZ(4.2 compared to 4.5), more Voltage(1.288v compared to 1.352), less heat sink(H100 compared to a H60), and same temps (most I get is 71-72'c crunching at 100% load for days on end).

Yes, really. Not all chips are equal. What does YOUR power draw look like? Use same app, or try AIDA64...

and although he has "more cooler", we can't exactly say that, as pump speed and fan speed differences can make cooler compares useless.

I have a couple of H100 coolers here. I think they suck. My CoolerMaster TPC812 is a much better cooler, by almost 10C at times, than my H100's. No idea why.

I still have a doubt, is it really bad my load temp?

bad, no. A bit high, perhaps. Normal for your cooler? I think so.

If you cannot get more than 4.2 GHz @ that 1.3 V...I mean...I ran 4.6 GHz @ 1.284 V with one of my 2600K. the other needed 1.325 V. 4.2 GHz is poopy.

So, poopy chip, yeah, temps should be high, I think.

You could try remounting the cooler and lowering the voltage a little.

hmm well I didn't specify that the h100 doesn't actually fit inside my case, so the fans are mounted on the outside and that leaves a 3mm (I think) gap between the fans and the radiator that might be, but I also wonder is that temp really a problem, does the processor get 100% load a lot?

I get little concerned in the 70s, but my rule is 80 or lower should be ok.

If you can make it cooler easily enough, then you should. Try other fans first, then re-seating cooler and possibly using different TIM.

But in reality your temps are ok and to be expected with air cooling.

don't get me wrong Esparza, your temps are within acceptable levels. I just think your temps should be lower. Dave is definitely more informed than I am, so if he says your OK.

That gap may very well be the reason your temps are not as good as I think they should be.

As for how often your CPU will be at full load, well that depends on what you do with your computer. Personally, my CPU runs at full load 24/7 as it's used as a cruncher for TPU WCG team. If all you do is game, watch videos, listen to music, and browse the web, it probably won't hit full load for more than a couple seconds at a time, if that much.

another thing i notice is, why my idle/low load voltage superior than my load voltage? right now im just web browsing and my processor is using 1.328 volts while on full load was 1.288 is this normal?

vdroop is normal yes, it's part of intel spec

some mobos have an option to reverse it, in my experience at least in the core2 days, such options were junk

If your idle voltage is higher than your load voltage, you must have disabled speedstep and/or set your vcore manually (should be offset).
