Idea to curb Spam, maybe? Thoughts?

I hate spammers... I just do. Irritating bunch of cockroaches.
They post there cr*p and links and move on, never to post again.
Half the junk they post doesn't work or has other baddies embedded.
A very small percentage is some what useful.

I was wondering if this may help curtail them... how about a block on posting external links until the member(s) has 5, 10, or whatever posts in their count.

I know that in some areas the posts don't count in the posts shown, but there still should be a count of posts that the block could be based upon.

Just thought I would put it out there.

there already is an automated system like that, if they post more than one or two links, moderators have to approve the post.


spammers caught on ages ago, and now make a few posts with a few words only, or quotes from earlier in the thread - and then edit in the spam links later (or ad them to their sig)

Just thought I would put the idea out there, 'cause there seems to be a few "one post wonders" who post links to the same sites for demoware, but use different handles/login ids.

So, all is good, then...guess they've been oked.

nah its more that they dont post it more than once, so we just watch them suspiciously.

This does happen quite often, Viper. People make multiple accounts to promote their products.

We have a great system in place, however (in addition to the automated stuff) ...
You members report them and we nuke them
It's been pretty effective really.

On topic: I know a lot of spam comes from China and from certain districts in China. Couldn't we just block ip's from those districts?

their dynamic ips come from such a large pool that we would effectively ban half the country.

banning certain asian countries would be an idea, but imo better deal with teh spam than locking out legitimate users from the joys of tpu forums

I get what you are saying but how many members are from China that are contributing members to the forums? I bet you could count them on one hand. Block most of China expect the established members here (wouldnt wanna lose any good guys) and be done with 90% of most spam in one shot.

I would be interesting to see a breakdown by country or region of where the TPU spam originates.

With the systems in place and the members diligently reporting, the spam is really pretty light here. They do get tricky once in awhile and slip in though.

china would be #1 by far. most of the spam i've decimated has come from the same email servers as well, so theres definitely patterns to it.
