Two words: Final Fantasy. Still by far the best RPG series I've ever played.

Spellforce was OK. It was a sort of RPG-RTS concept. Kind of like Starcraft for fantasy folks.

Oblivion is a great game, I have more hours of Oblivion logged on my Xfire than every other single player game combined :p

I just recently replayed Fallout on hard difficulty w/ a pure melee build. Too much fun, Super Sledge FTW!

Besides Oblivion, there really hasn't been anything worth playing in the RPG realm for some time IMO.

I have to admit, Baldur's Gate on PS2 kept my fancy for a while. I mean, it's not the greatest game ever, but in that sub-genre, and for a console it was quite good. Once you got out of the sewers and all that, and started hiking up the mountains and seeing the snow and such, it looked pretty cool. Gameplay was redundant, but that was part of it's charm, if it had been really dynamic, I might have been frustrated with it, given that it was a Diablo type game, and after Diablo being so simple and crude, I can't imagine a similar RPG to be any other way.

It might have been also that at the time I played it, I was in a weird living situation, on an Army base (long story..) and I sat around with a bunch of young grunts playing it, as well as some Tekken games among others. So the atmosphere helped make the game more enjoyable too.

Thanks for the comments on SpellForce, I almost installed it. I think I'll go find NAM and try to get it compatible with XP. That game was great.

Thanks for the comments on SpellForce, I almost installed it.

You SHOULD install it and try it. Always take opinions with a grain of salt. You may love the game. If not you can always remove it.

I have been playing RPGs for the last 25 years. My first experience was with the text based game called simply "adventure".

One of the things that keeps RPGs fresh is the diversity in play styles between games. Would you honestly like it if the next 10 games that came out were Oblivion clones?

Play the new ones, play the old ones, play the 3D ones and the 2D ones. Enjoy the gameplay and laugh or cry at the graphics, but at the end of the day you are still a roleplayer :)

You are correct Kreij, I should, but here's the thing:

I loathe installing anything. I cannot even stand installing things I know are a necessity and useful for my systems; things that I can completely control and master; dunno, it just bugs me.

Add on to that, that I do vaguely remember it, and my gut-feeling is that I wasn't impressed..

Plus, general response is that it wasn't so great (not just here, but elsewhere).

Now add those together :)

I loathe installing anything.

That is because you have done it so many times that you have lost the child-like wonder of experiencing something new. You have succumbed to the mindset that we should be disillusioned if all does not perform to some exacting standard. Step back, load something crappy and enjoy your renewed faith in the fact that you ARE in control !

Plus, general response is that it wasn't so great

Who is General Response, and who appointed him General of the army? ;)

Well, like Elveon, it's an action/rpg. It's just another Oblivion more or less, but some small quirks that will please a certain amount of people.

The biggest difference is that instead of clicking a button to attack, you initiate a combo, then you wait for the combo to end, then time it precisely to begin the next combination and so forth. If you miss-time, you start back at square one.

It's sure to throw some people, but might also please them as well.

There will never be the perfect game in any genre.
There will never even be the perfect game for a single person.
Each of us enjoys a game based on our gaming whims at the moment.
You may play a game and think it's great and a year later play it again and wonder what you were thinking.
Or perhaps you play a game and think it sucks, only to go back later and enjoy it.

That is the beauty of computer games.
So quit bitchin' and go play something :rockout:

I'm not being angry here, just telling it like it is !!

And 'telling it like it is,' is rooted in opinion as well...

Though I fail to see how that's relevant, whether a good point or not.

Ummm ... well .... ummmm ... I don't know.
What does being relevant have to do with posting on a forum thread that is based on opinion ? It's not like we are setting global policy or something here :D

I mean in regards to the followup comments about rpgs. I didn't really see anyone bickering at one another, just throwing out titles and a few comments.

Hence, whether your point was a good one or not. Obviously you meant no harm, it just felt misplaced.

I'll tell you what I'd like to see. I'd like to see an RPG from elder scrolls that can has multiplayer and single-player parts to it. What if you could play through a single player campaign, but could portal through to some kind of multi-dementional place where other heros such as yourself existed and the huge single-player game was only half the battle. I dunno, just speculating and hoping. If anybody had the ambition and the ability, it would be bethesda and elder scrolls.
