So I'm on the market for a 4K rig. All the funds not in yet, but I'm getting there. No real budget, but this is gonna be my pride and joy, so I say from $2500 to $3000. With the hardware we have now I'm up for anything. The one part I do have is a Corsair HX850. I'm debating between z97 and x99. I read there's no real difference in gaming with 4 vs 6 cores. But future proofing falls in part. Same thing with DDR3 vs 4. I'm more so looking at power efficiency and I'm seeing amazing things with the GTX 9xx. But I don't know if it beats 780 TIs or 290Xs at 4K. Then I could do sli 980 or 3 way 970 for cheaper and probably stronger. I definitely want the OS on a SSD and other stuff on a HDD. I need keyboard and mouse too. I'm getting the Corsiar Air 540 case.

Dual 980's, X99 on DDR3, samsung EVO 256GB, RAID 5 3TB drives for storage, map all your documents to folders on the RAID array, all games on the SSD unless you are pushed for space, older games would be good on the array.

Could you explain the RAID 5?
Raid 5 just means more than 2 drives generally running together with 1/3 the space reserved in case of drive drop/failure. A friend of mine runs one with 4 WD velociraptor 600gb drives as his whole system.

I agree with steevo on the matter for the most part. Part choices are fine and brands are mostly whatever you feel best with. I 4k game on 3 R9 290X cards right now and honestly you need at least 2 high end cards for that purpose. 3 cards will guarantee high-ultra on all games. Depending on the max amount of cards you want to go for will decide which platform (X99 or Z97) to go for.

i would say 3x 970 cost almost the same as 2x980. it should provide nice fps. consider 4690k/4790k +z97. look for 3sli capable motherboard.

I would agree, but scaling becomes an issue and the third card may not see its full potential. Scaling is never perfect and triSLI benchmarks of the 980 are a direct indicator of how well SLI is going to do for the 970's, and you will be getting about 50% performance out of the third card, power draw will be less with two 980's, and most games will see over 50FPS.

I just built one..lol..
Check the specs. ;)

The new 9 series has HDMI 2.0 support.
Older cards don't.
You would need display port 1.2 on your monitor or TV.
Keep that in mind if you get an older card.
The 780's do not have HDMI 2.0. and also require display port 1.2 to run 4k@ 60 hz or better.

Also triple sli is garbage.
Price to performance ratio is a big loss.

Not bad sir. How is she handling gaming?

I won't know til the middle of next week really but I will be sure to stop in when I get a chance to check.
The 980's are in the mail. :)
Running two 680's til they get here.
I have done 4k with them also but only with one.
Sli doesn't work right with these older cards in 4k, it has other issues, etc.

Mass effect 1-3 with 4k mods @ 3840x2160 and ini tweaks looked amazing.
Seriously.
And ran like a charm.

Buy a couple of 970s and overclock the the hell out of them. 980s are not worth the extra money. Instead, get an oculus rift DK2 and take your GF out for a nice dinner.

But are there already true gamer 4K displays? I mean BIG (29", 30" and up) with fast timings? And AsusROG G-sync 27 " is way to small for my tastes and I do not know for sure if it is 4K.

I personally have the AOC 4K panel and its suppose to be the best so far. A little mad I heard there is a g-sync dropping soon.

I'm holding off on the 4k battle until a single card can run 4k, SLI/Crossfire is just to glitchy in some games and great in others.

but yeah 2 x 980 would be a good bet and it's really up to you on the cpu/ram I'm not sure if the x99 ddr4 stuff just needs a little time to mature.

I second veiledcascade, I am waiting also for a single card that can run 4K 60fps comfortably.

Besides, I am still dealing with nVidia destroying my 780Ti resell value...
