I'm still thinking to upgrade to a GTX 480

What everyone means is that there are other alternatives. Performance wise the GTX480 isn't better than a 5970 and they are about the same price.

i understand that but what i can get a gtx 480 for is around $700-750 when a ati 5970 is more like $900-1000

If you look at staticice.com.au

GTX480 the cheapest atm is 723 AUD

while the 5970 is 799AUD

and the 5850 is $345 AUD which if you buy crossfire will cost 690 AUD

If you consider current prices/performance ratio & power consumption the 2x5850's will outweight both other 2 choices then the 5970 will outweight gtx480.

this thread was made because i just wanted know if upgrading from my 280s to a 480 was a good idea thats it, i have looked at some ati cards but on my res 1920x1200 http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/nvidia_gtx480/ it seems to be fine , and i will be sli them when they drop half price

Which everybody has said ISN'T A GOOD IDEA. There's another thread with a slightly similar issue here, from GTX 295 to GTX 470/480. Newtekie I think? 470 was the choice, since iirc he prefers to stay with Nvidia. But yes, everybody else did say that you'd be better off with a 5970, but unlike in that other thread the OP doesn't want a multi-GPU setup anymore. In your case you have no qualms with it, so why not 5970? It's not like THEY won't drop half price when the GTX 480 does...

If thats the case then the 480 becomes the more preferable choice but I'm confused as to why it's so much more expensive.

i have thought of that but doesn't leave me with much of a upgrade down the track if i get a gtx 480 i can sli them i did the same with the 280 and if you look here there isn't a ati 5970 under $800 http://www.shopbot.com.au/m/?m=ati+5970

If this guy wants to waste his money on a 480 when you can get Crossfire 5850's for less, let him.

He's been told many times that it isnt a good idea to even upgrade, let alone get the power-hungry dog from nVidia.


In the mean time, I'll sit here and at this thread.

if you want but i dont see it as a waste of money whats a waste is going out and buying 4 of them.
