Insane disk R/W under Vista

The switch from XP SP3 to Vista is perfect. Except one dispointing stuff: the HDD LED is always on. Every time I boot up, the light goes on. It stays that way for a long time(almost 30 mins!) It's driving me mad. What the heck is Vista doing then? :banghead:

Have you just installed it? On a fresh install Vista likes to check and see what programs you've been using the most in order to adjust super fetch. Once it gets used to your normal routine and optimizes it into the start up routine hard drive activity should go down a bit. Vista loves to index no matter what you're doing, and that really grinds down on the hard drive. If you don't like it, you can disable it. I hate hearing the sound of a hard drive thrashing when all you're doing is web surfing.

It won't Superfetch will be loading and unloading between HDD and RAM for quite a bit after initial OS boot. It will stop if you are using your HDD or RAM for something else, but when you go idle it makes use of that time and those resources to help the OS learn your patterns what you do. For me as a gamer it does work quite well...worth leaving on...my Antec900 is on my desk so the HDD light is over eye level, I don't even notice it...and with my WDC SE16 640 so quiet I can't hear it running.

Vista is doing what it's supposed to here, from what I've read by searching Google this is normal and part of the design of how the OS works.

It can also be from System Restore, there's a certain time in the day it creates a restore point and it may take a while.. maybe that is why the hd led is active =P.

Things to try:

DIsable system restore
Disable the indexer - go to the drives properties and untick index this drive
Check the windows defragger and disable its scheduling
Disable hibernation - 6GB of ram for me means a 6GB hiberfile, which takes a while to write.
set a static page file - lock it to 2GB or so manually

I saw that as well. How much RAM do you have? I am assuming 2 GB with that activity. 4 GB got rid of that annoying activity and the move to 8 GB was that much better.

i've ran 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8GB at various times on my systems, and it doesnt. Vista loves 4GB+, but 2GB is definately enough.

Your problem is definately software related - dont go looking at hardware.
